"Choice Projects" are assigned once per semester. You have a few choices with these projects.
Firstly, you choose the novel. The novel needs to be at an appropriate level for you. You may choose a novel that you read on your own from home or from the Media Center or from my classroom library. Please approve it with me before you begin reading your novel.
Secondly, you choose the projects that you want to do after you’ve finished reading. Red projects are worth 25 points each. Blue projects are worth 50 points each. Your goal is to complete enough projects to add up to 50 points (in other words, either two reds or one blue).
Your only option to get extra credit is to present your projects to the class.
If you have ideas to add to the Red or Blue projects below, email me.
Frequently Asked Questions and answers to them are on this slideshow.
"Red Projects" are worth 25 points each. You need to do two projects to attempt full credit.
Write a journal entry in the voice of a character. Make sure this journal expresses the character’s thoughts, feelings, and ideas. Goal: at least 250 words.
Write a Q&A between a reporter and a character in the story. The answers should show what you know about the character. Goal: at least 250 words in 5 questions and answers.
Write a newspaper article about one major event from the book. Use an exciting headline and include who, what, where, when details in your article. Goal: at least 250 words.
Write a letter to a friend recommending your book. Tell what the book was about and why you would recommend it. Goal: at least 250 words.
Compose a poem or a song that summarizes the story. Include important elements like the title, setting, problem, and solution! Goal: at least 10 lines in two stanzas.
Create a book jacket for the book you read. Make sure it looks different from the actual book jacket. Goal: include title, setting, characters and a short summary on the back.
Create a comic strip showing the major events from your book. Include captions and dialogue bubbles to retell the story. Goal: at least 5 frames showing 5 major events.
Create a movie poster to show what your book would look like if it were a movie. Goal: include critic reviews, a plot summary, and the title and author of the book it’s based on.
Create a glossary of vocabulary words that you come across while you read. Include the part of speech, definition, the chapter and the sentence that the word is used in. Goal: at least 20 words.
Made by Reading Rainbow, this book report template breaks down the different elements of a book. Goal: 250 words.
This Google Slides template does the same as the Docs template, except in a different format. Goal: 250 words.
"Blue Projects" are worth 50 points each. You need to do one project to attempt full credit.
Write a one-act play script summarizing the events of your novel. Goal: at least 500 words in 3 scenes.
Write a research paper on a social issue that pertains to your book. Include the reason why you chose the issue and a bibliography. Goal: at least 500 words.
Rewrite the last chapter. Do you think your novel could have ended in a better way? You can fix it by rewriting the resolution! Goal: at least 500 words.
Write a paper in which you compare your book to the movie version if one exists. Goal: at least 500 words.
Write a paper in which you compare and contrast your book with another novel in the same genre. Goal: at least 500 words.
Write a short story using one or two elements of your book (setting, etc.) and recreate the plot. Goal: at least 500 words.
Create a “choose your own ending” story or an “if/then adventure” story based on the book that you read. If interested, please see this blog post by Eric Curts for help with this project.
Create a travel brochure based on a setting in your book. Give reasons why people should want to visit this location. Describe what occurred in this location in your book. Include a map of the location and/or pictures that remind you of this location.
Create a map of the fantasy world where your novel is set. (If the genre of your novel is not fantasy, this project is probably not the one for you.) See me if you need help using Inkarnate. Goal: your map should include at least ten major locations within that world.
Upload a video that you record where you and friends portray characters from the novel reenacting scenes from the book. This trailer should play like a movie trailer and should make me want to read this book. Goal: the trailer should be at least 2 minutes.
Upload a video where you and friends portray characters from the novel reenacting one longer scene from the book. This is different from the trailer in that in allows you to use a longer scene. If you have a way to do so, you may also want to animate this scene. Goal: the scene should be at least 2 minutes.
