At a lower altitude than Cuzco, the Sacred Valley, with its rich natural beauty and cultural significance, allows a more gradual period of adjustment to the altitude for the traveler. Travel time to the hotel is approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. Light snacks will be provided.
Upon arrival at the hotel, we drink some muña tea and prepare for the next day’s adventure.
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before we depart at 10:00am to tour sites of the Sacred Valley, Chincheros, Maras and Moray. We take in beautiful mountain views of the Urubamba range and learn about the significance of Maras to the Inca nobles of the Inca Empire in its day.
Moray is located about 7 km southwest of Maras, this unique archaeological site features giant natural depressions or pits in the earth’s surface. These depressions were used to build terraced agricultural areas with irrigation channels, serving as an advanced greenhouse or biological experimentation station.
Salineras (Salt Mines) is located northwest of the town of Maras, this site consists of around 3,000 small salt pools, each averaging about 5 square meters. During the dry season, these pools are filled, or "irrigated," every three days with saltwater from a natural spring above the pools. As the water evaporates, the salt gradually solidifies. Some say the area has a healing effect.
June 22 Day 5: Visit to Ollantaytambo and the citadel of Machupicchu
After morning preparation and breakfast, we depart at 8:30am for the approximately 35-minute drive to the town of Ollantaytambo where we will embark by train to Aguas Calientes, an hour and 40-minute ride and then, on to the entrance of Machu Pichu by bus. We will have lunch in Aguas Calientes before boarding transport to the entrance of Machu Pichu.
Our tour guide will take us through the Machu Picchu Citadel, exploring highlights like the Main Plaza, Circular Tower, Sacred Solar Clock, Royal Quarters, Temple of the Three Windows, and more. You’ll then have free time to wander, meditate, and connect with the site’s profound energy.
Afterward our return journey by train to Ollantaytambo, where a transfer back to Cusco awaits.
June 23 Day 6: Sacred Valley to Cuzco
At this auspicious and busy time of year in the region, we depart by 9 AM for our trip to Cuzco, where we will be staying at a Hotel in Cuzco as we prepare for the grand spectacle called Inti Raymi.
We will visit and learn about the temple of Qoricancha, the Golden Temple, where the Inti Raymi begins.
In the afternoon we explore the city of Cuzco as all citizens will be getting ready for the Inti Raymi the next day.
June 24 Day 7: Inti Raymi – Festival of the Sun
Today, we experience Inti Raymi, the ancient Inca Festival of the Sun, a vibrant celebration honoring Inti, the Sun God. For the Inca people, this is an auspicious day.
This festival, held every June, is one of the most significant in Inca tradition and was believed to renew the bond between the Sun and the people.
The Inti Raymi celebration in Peru dates back to the 15th century, originating under the reign of the Inca Emperor Pachacuti. The celebration was a grand event with festivities involving the entire empire, held in Cusco's main plazas and the Sacsayhuamán fortress.
However, with the arrival of Spanish colonizers in the 16th century, the celebration was banned as part of efforts to suppress indigenous religions and promote Catholicism. For nearly 400 years, Inti Raymi was practiced only discreetly or through modified traditions.
In 1944, Peruvian historian Humberto Vidal Unda revived the festival based on historical accounts. Today, Inti Raymi is a major annual event in Cusco, drawing locals and tourists to experience reenactments, music, and traditional dances celebrating Andean heritage.
We now get to celebrate it.
Morning - Cusco Main Square
Our tour guide will help us find a prime spot on the Main Square, La Plaza de Armas, where we’ll witness the Inca, his Royal Entourage, and the Imperial Army processing through the historic Inca streets, such as Loreto Street, until they arrive at Aucaypata. The Ñustas, Aqllas (chosen women), and the full imperial army will already be gathered in the Plaza de Armas, awaiting the Inca’s arrival. Here, the Inca, as the supreme ruler of the empire, will perform the traditional Coca ceremony and invoke the Apus, or Mountain Protectors.
Prepare to be in the crowds! Be sure to bring everything you'll need for the day, including ample food, water, and sun protection.
June 25 Day 8: Bus transport to Puno (gateway to Lake Titicaca)
We will depart by bus to the city of Puno (as we make our way to Lake Titicaca), which is a nine-hour driving and sightseeing adventure. We stop along the way for lunch. Centering and stillness practices wherever you are!
Arrival at hotel
June 26 Day 9: Lake Titicaca. Floating islands of the Uros
Departing at 10 AM from our hotel, our journey then takes us to Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world and a place of immense spiritual significance. This tranquil, sacred body of water is believed to be the birthplace of the sun and the Incas themselves.
Here, we’ll visit the floating islands of the Uros and witness their traditional way of life. The stillness of the lake invites us to turn inward and find inner peace, reflecting on our journey so far.
The Floating Islands of Uros are a truly unique destination where ancient traditions thrive on the waters of Lake Titicaca. The Uros people have lived on these man-made islands for centuries, crafting their homes, boats, and even schools from the totora reeds that grow in the lake. As you glide across the waters in a traditional reed boat, you'll gain insight into the daily lives of the Uros community, who continue to live in harmony with their environment.
Return to hotel
June 27 Day 10: Amantani Island
Arrive at Amantani Island by boat. Take a motorcycle ride halfway toward the Pachatata temple. Walk to Pachatata temple.
Sitting for meditation and contemplation.
Lunch served with a local family.
June 28 Day 11: Hayu Marka – The portal of Aramu Muru
The portal of Aramu Muru also known as "Hayu Marca" or "Willka Uta" is surely one of the most mystical and energetic places that exists near Lake Titicaca, an altar carved in a single piece of rock over 5 meters, surrounded by a very particular landscape. Also known as the Gate of the Gods/Doorway into other dimensions.
Afternoon visit to the beach in the city of Juli.
June 29 Day 12: Fly to Lima from Puno
At 10am, we depart from the hotel in Puno to Juliaca, where we catch a flight to Lima. In Lima we stay at the same hotel, Epicus. We enjoy together a farewell dinner, closing circle, and rest for the one-night stay before the tour ends.
Day 30 : Fly from Lima back to the US
Full of splendor, music, color, traditions and cultural pride, the Inti Raymi, lights up the streets of Cusco every June 24. With parades, and reenactments of religious rites with song and dance, the festival represents the stages and levels of connection between the Inca and the power of the sun.
Inti, the Quechua word for Sun and the name of the Sun God of the Inca, unites with Raymi, also from the Quechua meaning festival, to become “The festival of the Sun” . An expression of awe, wonder, respect, gratitude and veneration for the solar principle. It is considered the most important among all Inca celebrations.
It was celebrated to thank the sun for its life-giving energy with reverence and honor and to plead for its return during the winter solstice, the time when the sun is at its farthest point from the Earth.
Inti as the supreme deity, provided light, warmth and fertility to Pachamama (Mother Earth). Worship was meant to ensure a good harvest and give protection, health and strength to the people. Historically the celebration also paid tribute to the Inca, the first-born son of the Sun.
As “sons” of the Sun, the Inca were attuned to the power of the solar force. Without it, there would be no life, after all. And as in other ancient solar principle worshipping cultures of the past such as the Egyptian, Vedic-Hindu, Aztec and Mayan civilizations, they understood something about the connection between the energy that makes the sunshine and the energy that gives vitality, aliveness awareness and illumination to the human being.
Inti Raymi and Wellness
Wellness means wholeness. A sense of the interrelationship of forces in the outside world and within oneself and the connection between the two so there is harmony. Wellness means connection. A connection to the outer world by seeing and knowing the same forces at play within oneself. Wellness is unity. A unity of heart and mind, a unity in the mind. And at another level, what spiritual teachers say for ultimate wellness, a unity of the microcosm with the macrocosm.
The sun is the symbol of light. When we use words like “brilliant”, “radiant”, “glowing”, “illumined”, “enlightened” we are talking about an experience of light and the fullness that comes from that experience. A human being can possess all those living qualities. Those qualities are within. He/she can embody some measure of the powers of the sun. As the Yoga/meditation master Swami Veda Bharati, writes: “everything outside of you is symbolic of your internal landscape.”
In one of the ancient Indian scriptures, The Suryopanishad, (the Upanishad of the sun) it says that “persons who worship the sun as Brahman (the eternal light of knowledge and truth) becomes powerful, active, intelligent and acquires long life” (from Surya Namaskar A technique of Solar Vitalization by Swami Satyananda Saraswati).
The Inti Raimi culminates at the incredible Sacsayhuaman. Sacsayhuaman was/is the ground of the Spirit. A fortified complex on the highest part of a hill to the north of the city of Cuzco. This architectural marvel, called by the Inca “The House of the Sun” was built with a precision and grandeur that was unmatched for its time. It served not only to protect the Inca but to act as ceremonial center, a space where prayers could be heard. Where prayers were offered with great devotion to the sources of strength, light, power and life itself.
The size of the structures and materials using for the construction of “The House of the Sun” and the complexity of engineering needed for the resulting complex, show us that a light of knowledge and a source of power, as represented by the sun, was within the Inca himself.
So the Inti Raymi is a reminder of a light source within and without. And the effort to unite with that source of light, so that we can ultimately be living in that and from that light.
Mariella was born in Peru, where the rich culture and landscapes inspire awe and a deep connection to nature. She believes that the experience of being in awe—a powerful feeling of joy, amazement, and vastness—expands the heart and nurtures emotional and physical well-being. Her first encounter with feeling awe came at age 8, standing before the snow-capped peaks of Huascarán Mountain in Ancash. This feeling deepened at 11 as she immersed herself in the vibrant energy of the Amazon rainforest. Around age 22, returning to Cuzco to learn traditional healing practices with the locals further strengthened her cultural ties. Now, as part of Sacred Site Seeing, Silvia and Mariella guide travelers on tours that celebrate Peru’s vibrant culture, inviting them to connect deeply with its traditions and landscapes.
Mariella holds a Master’s in Health Sciences from Rutgers University, focusing on integrative health and wellness, a Master’s in Health Care Administration, and is a Duke-trained Health and Wellness Coach.
Mariella is certified in yoga in the Himalayan Yoga Tradition—a meditative practice rooted in an unbroken lineage of Masters from the Himalayas. She also holds a clinical training certificate in mind-body medicine from the Benson-Henry Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital. With over 18 years of experience, she specializes in clinical aromatherapy, therapeutic massage, and Reiki.
Silvia Baratta
Silvia’s love for spiritual travel began through her role as guest services coordinator at a yoga/meditation training institute, Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) in Rishikesh, India. She organized and guided pilgrimage tours of the Himalayan region and elsewhere for guests and students attending programs at SRSG while living, working and teaching there. She has discovered through yoga practice that inner travel enriches outer travel and vice versa.
Silvia is co-founder along with Mariella Silva of Sacred Site Seeing.
