World Youth Day (WYD) is a global gathering of young people from across the Catholic Church, centred on encountering Christ, one another, and the wider Church.
Held every few years in a different international city, WYD is more than an event, it's a pilgrimage. Young people come together to pray, celebrate their faith, and experience the unity of the worldwide Church.
What began in the 1980s as a simple invitation from Pope Saint John Paul II quickly grew into something much bigger. Hundreds of thousands of young people responded, revealing a deep desire for connection, purpose, and faith. In response, WYD was formally established as a continuing global celebration of young people and the Church.
WYD follows a rhythm that brings together prayer, formation, and celebration:
Opening Mass – marks the beginning of the gathering
Catechesis – teachings and small group gatherings with bishops
Youth Festival – music, cultural events, and creative expression
Reconciliation & Vocations Fairs – opportunities for prayer and discernment
Welcome with the Pope – a joyful gathering of the global Church
Way of the Cross – reflecting on Christ's Passion
Vigil – overnight prayer, adoration, and community
Closing Mass – the sending forth of pilgrims
In 2027, World Youth Day will take place in Seoul, South Korea, marking a significant moment as the global Church gathers in Asia for the first time in over three decades.
Seoul, a vibrant and modern city, is profoundly shaped by a powerful narrative of faith. The Catholic Church in Korea emerged from the passionate quest for truth among laypeople and has flourished through the inspiring witness of martyrs who stood firm despite persecution.
This unique history infuses WYD Seoul with a distinctive character:
Encounter sacred sites and stories enriched by the bravery of Korean martyrs
Experience a dynamic fusion of ancient tradition and vibrant modern culture
Be embraced by a Catholic community renowned for its warmth and youthful spirit
World Youth Day Seoul 2027 has a theme centred on hope. In a world filled with uncertainty, conflict, and pressure, WYD encourages young people to find confidence not just in themselves, but also in Christ.
The official WYD27 logo gets this message across really well. It combines the name "Seoul" with the letters WYD, showing how different cultures connect and how young people from all over the world come together.
In the middle of the logo is a cross, symbolising Christ’s victory. Vibrant colours surround it, capturing the spirit of the event:
Red stands for sacrifice and the courage of martyrs.
Blue represents the energy and liveliness of youth.
Yellow signifies the light and presence of the Holy Spirit.
All in all, the theme and logo reflect what WYD Seoul 2027 is all about: a worldwide Church united in faith, filled with hope, and ready to take bold steps forward.
We highly recommend looking at the resources given by the official WYD planning team. These resources include a comprehensive history of South Korea and it's Catholic heritage; what WYD 2027 will look like (pastorally, logistically and spiritually); as well as how to prepare yourself spiritually!
It is incredibly important to understand what the spirit of WYD is (a pilgrimage to encounter Christ alongside young people) and how to prepare yourself so you can fully immerse yourself into WYD. As well as attending the preparatory sessions required by the Archdiocesan pilgrimage, we encourage you to familiarise yourself with WYD individually through the resources down below.
