Pointscore is the heart of our weekly events for the swimming club. It is how we encourage swimmers to better themselves, learn about racing technique and processes and enjoy social interaction. Hopefully swimmers reach goals, achieve successes, gain confidence and build resilience from their participation and interaction with club mates, club officials and the wider swimming community.
When: Pointscore is held each Friday night from 6:00 to 7:30.
What happens: The idea of Pointscore is to swim to get points. Points are gained by improving your time. So, you are racing against yourself. There are other ways to get points also (see below).
Friday Organisation:
Each Friday, there are 3 events on offer.
1. Freestyle occurs every week.
2. Each week there is one offstroke offered on a rotational basis: Week 1 - Backstroke, Week 2 - Breaststroke, Week 3 - Butterfly etc.
3. Distance event. One distance event is offered each week from 200m or 400m or 800m Freestyle, or 200m IM.
Freestyle distance events may be swum by anyone, except for the 800m which needs a qualifying time from a 400m swim of 8:30.00.
To be able to swim the 200m IM, a swimmer must have been promoted to the following events at Pointscore: 50m Freestyle, 50m Breaststroke, 50m Backstroke, and 33m Butterfly.
An example of the order of the events for a Friday Night could be as follows:
100m Freestyle
17m Freestyle
33m Freestyle
50m Freestyle (including 'extra')
100m Freestyle (including 100A)
100m Backstroke
17m Backstroke
33m Backstroke
50m Backstroke (including 'extra')
100m Backstroke
400m Freestyle
Note the repeating pattern of the 100-17-33-50 for the freestyle then the offstroke.
Organising Swimmers into Events:
Generally each swimmer will start in the shortest (17m) distance. Each distance and stroke has a time to achieve to be able to be promoted to the next distance up. We call this the Promotion Time. Click the link to see the Promotion Times for each distance/stroke.
You can check the Pointscore results page for your child's swim time and see if they are promoted to the next distance.
The only exception to the above rule is for 10 year old. Whilst the goal is to work to achieve the Promotion Time, we are aware that swimmers need to feel socially safe also. If a 17m swimmer turns 10, they may choose to move to the 33m distance or they may continue to work towards promotion.
Points System:
Improvement Points: Points are given for the time improvement for the swimmer over the season.
Participation Points: 10 points are given each time a swimmer swims their event.
Promotion Points: 50 points are given when a swimmer is promoted to the next distance.
