Rainwater Harvesting System
Why Rainwater Harvesting Systems?
Bangalore receives an average of 970 mm of rainfall annually. This means around 87000L of rainwater falls on a roof of 100 sqm. If you catch it instead of losing it as surface run-off, you will be water secure for at least 3-4 months in a year, saving at least 7600 rupees worth of tanker water in a year. Average Rainwater Harvesting Systems cost about 50000 rupees, which means in 6 and a half years the Rainwater Harvesting System (RHS) will have paid itself off. If your roof is larger, it will pay itself off even sooner!
The Law

- Existing buildings of roof size 2400 ft2 and above and proposed buildings of roof size 1200 ft2 and above should build a RHS

- Residential buildings: additional charges of 25% of total water and sanitary charges will be levied for the first 3 months of noncompliance and thereafter 50% of total water and sanitary charges until the RHS is provided
- Non residential buildings: additional charges of 50% of total water and sanitary charges for the first 3 months of noncompliance and thereafter additional charges of 100% of total water and sanitary charges until the RHS is provided
