There are basically four types of funeral services, the most common of which are:
Traditional full burial service
Direct burial
Full cremation service
Direct cremation
All of these funeral services can be easily be made bespoke to suit your needs and requirements by your local funeral director.
Over recent years many new trends have become apparent, none more so than green burials. With more and people becoming aware of the environment and the impact that cremations have on it, not only is the funeral industry undertaking measure to try and reduce its impact, but people are specifically asking for greener funerals.
A “full service” funeral consists of a viewing, a funeral ceremony and burial at the local gravesite. This full burial service is what your local funeral home offers as its main package. This would include a viewing at the funeral home where the deceased family can pay their respects. When visiting the Chapel of Rest to visit the deceased, it is recommended that they be embalmed.
A funeral service is usually help at a local church where prayers, eulogies, reading and music is performed. After which, the deceased is transported to the cemetery or burial locations. If this is at the same church, the coffin is usually carried by pull bearers.
After the burial service, family are friends usually gather for a wake or reception to celebrate the life of their loved one.
A direct burial is just that, the deceased is buried shortly after death, once the funeral directors have obtained the death certificate and appropriate paperwork, with no funeral service.
A direct funeral is a cost effective funeral option as the body does not require embalming nor does it need an expensive coffin or casket. There is no funeral service at the church which also reduces the cost. The only other expense is that of the cemetery plot and memorial headstone.
Similar to the full burial service, the full cremation service would include a viewing of the deceased at your local funeral home, a funeral service at the crematorium, plus basic cremation. The cremated ashes of your loved one would be placed in an urn for the family.
Like the direct burial service, a direct cremation takes places shortly after the death, with no funeral service. No embalming, no visitation and usually a basic cardboard coffin is used for the cremation. Again, this will be an inexpensive funeral operation.
