To get a brief theoretical introduction to the concept of haunting, you'll read a selection from Avery Gordon’s (1997/2008) Ghostly Matters. Gordon (1997/2008) explains that “we need to know that something is missing in order to even begin to look for it” (p. 178).
So, following Gordon’s observation of haunting as a necessary exploration of the unknown or overlooked, we'll engage the ghost as a trace of social violence, as an unruly past that is unsettling our present.
What does Gordon mean by referring to power as "furniture without memories" (p. 3)?
What is the value of the ghost? How can the lens of haunting impact our understanding of history?
What separates a haunting from trauma or a missed story?
How is facing the ghost a uniquely personal process? What "obsessions" (p. 16) keep you (us) from engaging with your (our) own hauntings?
