Yes, although you will likely not work in the same business as your child. Family volunteers are typically not assigned in the same business as their child to promote greater independence, student learning opportunities, and the development of critical skills. However, you may eat lunch with your child during their break and will see them throughout the day!
Nope! The students are expected to read and follow their detailed job descriptions throughout the day. As a volunteer, you will use your discretion if students need help reading through any instructions.
If you know your assigned business ahead of time, you can review the various job responsibilities in your business on our lab tour pages (choose the lab to which you are assigned, find the specific business, click "visit [business name]". If you do not know your assigned business, choose a few to review to get a sense of BizTown job responsibilities.
No! This is the students' day to learn about careers and themselves, and to support their teams. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace, and the process of learning is the goal.
Volunteers will allow the students to do the work and encourage them to do their best. In BizTown, you are their mentor! As a mentor, you will offer constructive feedback, bring a respectful and positive attitude, and create a comfortable environment.
There is popcorn and coffee available free of charge from the Café shop. However, there are no vending machines or lunch provided. Please bring your own lunch and beverage, if desired. There is a volunteer break room with tables, chairs, refrigerator, and microwave available for your use.
Students learn best with an engaged volunteer- and you’ll have more fun, too! We expect you to give your full attention to the students while you are volunteering, and keep time on your phone to a minimum. We understand that life happens, though; if you need to step out for any reason, please let JA Staff know and we will work with you to find a space that works.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of young people by volunteering at JA BizTown!
