Creating a supportive environment for women who love weightlifting
Hi all Tasmanian women who love Weightlifting,
My name is Kaity Fassina, I was an Australian representative in Olympic Weightlifting for 12 years and during that time my biggest achievements included multiple national and intentional records, top 10 ranking at World Championships and Silver medalist at 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Now retired from elite level weightlifting I want to give back to my beloved sport and focus on my passion in supporting women in achieving excellence in Olympic weightlifting.
I am a accredited level 2 Weightlifting coach and also have a Health Science degree majoring in Physical Education with Honors. I currently work as a Health / PE and Sport Science teacher and I am a member of AIS Female Performance and Health Initiative Athlete Reference Group. The groups purpose is to discuss and brainstorm resources and their accessibility in relation to health considerations for athletes around Australia. Being apart of this group has inspired me to follow my passion in supporting women in their athletic careers.
I would like to introduce my own initiative to support and help grow participation and excellence in Tasmanian Weightlifting.
Weightlifting Tasmania Women's Squad
(WTWS)
Evidence has shown that for an athlete to succeed they need 3 things:
Competence: People need to gain mastery of tasks and learn different skills.
Connection or Relatedness: People need to experience a sense of belonging.
Autonomy: People need to feel in control of their own behaviours and goals.
Competence and autonomy develops in your own gym and coaches, although the WTWS help develop autonomy and competence, connection and relatedness is the main goal of the women's squad. My vision for this squad is to create an inclusive and supportive environment assisting weightlifters with all abilities to achieve their own goals. And in addition, also creating pathways where Tasmanian weightlifters can participate at a national and international level. This squad will also provide educational sessions facilitated by Kaity focusing on women's health that is specific to weightlifting. In my experience when you have a greater knowledge of your own body you are able to be more accountable for your own success in training and on the platform.
No qualifying standards are required for this squad just commitment and participation.
General knowledge and the skill of Olympic lifts is required for this squad. - To learn Olympic lifting please contact Kaity directly
The squad is open to all athletes/ coaches and weightlifting enthusiasts state wide.
Must be over 12 years old (open to discussion)
