Details
This trail starts off innocently along the foothills of the west side, Franklin mountains, but as soon as you get into Thunderbird Canyon, the terrain changes and displays beautiful, red rock waterfalls. You scramble up these majestic rock formations until you reach the top of the Thunderbird, and continue on to just below the ridge of the Franklin mountains. At that point you turn left and head toward Mammoth Rock. You begin descending along and around Mammoth rock until you find a rarely used trail which I have named Old man’s Trail all the way down to where it all began.
This hike has a little bit of everything, clean trails, bouldering, steep climbs, and plenty of bushwhacking.
Be prepared to ascend 1,600 ft in under 2 miles. Bring trekking poles and gaiters so you can enjoy this lollipop trail hike.
