At the end of each week we will recap what we have learned and done in class. This is a great place to see what students are engaging in during class time.
To culminate the unit, we are heading to Bellevue Botanical Gardens. There, we will look and see how different gardens are planned and connect it to our garden project. We will learn from a master gardener (Ms. Richards) and explore unique pieces that can be added to a garden. The garden project will be due at the end of the term with a gallery walk presentation.
In week 9, we are looking at prisms and pyramids. We will see how they are related and how we can derive a formula for each. The following week we will be working on reviewing for the unit exam and taking the test before we head off to break.
We have launched our Geometry Unit. We are learning about circles and how they are different from rectangles and triangles. We have explored area and circumference through lab activities. Here, students create their own formulas without it being given to them. This helps understand the relationships between the shapes and their measures.
Another interesting piece, students were given a question to ponder. "If you had the opportunity to get bonus points by answering a bonus question on a test, would you keep it or gift the points to the lowest-scoring student in the class?"
We have started a new unit! We are moving into our geometry work. This work still directly connects with our equations work. We started by heading to the trees for a tree-age activity. We learned how to use the circumference of a tree to find the diameter. Then we applied a little science by investigating the species of a tree to calculate the age of the tree.
Later in this unit, we will be working toward a project that involves a community garden, in real life and as a scaled model.
As we moved deeper into our unit, we explored how the scale of an object can be found using proportions. We looked at online maps, blue prints for houses, and found very long distances between major landmarks. This was the last bit of learning for this unit and will bring us to our exam in week 5.
Week 1 & 2
Welcome to trimester 2. In these weeks we reviewed ratios and proportions. We then made the connection to direct variation and graphing these rates.
To end the trimester, we took an exam on our expressions and equations units. Then we worked on our unit project, Bookish. Students wrote and illustrated their own math books to show their learning. The last day was spent with students doing read-alouds to the class.
In these weeks we started work on our unit with a project. Each student is writing a book to illustrate the use of expressions and equations. We also learned how to make visual representations of equations using Algebra tiles. We learned to use one and two step equations this week.
In weeks 7 and 8, we began our second unit, expressions. We have learned that we can represent unknown values with a variable. We also learned that some times there are a lot of unknowns but we can rewrite them into simpler terms. This brought us to our next concept of substituting numbers for a variable. Some situations, the variable changes, such as waiting in line at a car wash. integer tiles and algebra tiles can help us model this thinking before moving on to the numbers and expressions.
In these weeks we finalized our number systems project. So many different civilizations were shared and we learned a little more about how math as we know it came to be. We also prepared for our first exam. After the exam, we reflected on what we learned and what we still need work on. For many of us, integers still present a challenge but we will continue to see and work with these in the coming unit. In week 7, we see an introduction to Algebra through our expressions unit.
This week... we worked on applying integer rules to fractions and decimals. We also started our first project "Ancient Number Systems." Some systems students are exploring include Aztec, Egyptian, and Norse.
This week... we learned the foundations to set us up for the rest of the year. We learned how to use stations and how to work with classmates, how to use Canvas and One Note. We set up class norms. We also did math... working with numbers and shapes, understanding number sense. We also worked on ALEKS (goals) and set up a class music playlist. We learn the schedule and were introduced to the materials.
