Now, these roadblocks have been removed. The new policy allows for more than 100 countries to register their accounts using same procedures as Chinese companies. Moreover, when the account is opened, there is no longer a need for an initial investment in WeChat Advertising, WeChat's tool for sending advertising messages.

To register and start using WeChat, you need to be verified by an already registered user of WeChat. If this user is a resident of Mainland China, he/she needs to have an account that has been created at least six months ago and have WeChat Pay connected to his/her WeChat account. If the user is not a resident of Mainland China he/she needs to have an account that has been created at least one month ago. Make sure the user verifying you hasn't verified anybody for at least one month and hasn't been blocked recently.

If you receive an invalid phone number message, double-check that your phone number is not a VoIP number. If it is, you will need to use a different phone number, as these types of numbers are not accepted by the platform to register or create a new account.

You may need to check if the phone number you used to register has already been registered to another account. You cannot register the same number to multiple accounts, as this will cause verification issues with the server.

Another problem when registering for an account or verifying your phone number with WeChat is issues with your SMS provider. Confirm that your mobile number can receive SMS messages. To do this, you will need to ensure that your provider allows SMS messages and that you have a strong cellular network connection.

Over the past year, Tencent has made significant changes to the process for opening official accounts on WeChat. The good news is that overseas businesses can now register for an official account themselves, without needing a Chinese WeChat account or minimum ad spend like in the past. The bad news is that overseas businesses now must register for their own official accounts, since the number of accounts linked to one business license has been reduced from 20 to 5 to now 2, meaning that a China-based agency cannot set up the account on your behalf using their own business license anymore.

The Australian government can consider requesting WeChat to allow its international users to register individual WeChat subscription accounts and ensure such accounts are not subject to Chinese censorship.
