I have recently retired and am living my dream—to be a full-time writer! Dream? It can sometimes be a nightmare! Without the structure of my daily routine as a teacher, days can blur together in a fog of procrastination and isolation, where the blank page becomes a daily torment. Rejection is frequent, and success, when it comes, is often fleeting and always underpaid. Since I started, in 2010, with my first novel, Hrothgar, the market for books (both ebook and paperback) has declined every year—and now there's a new kid on the block to steal our thunder—the (so-called) AI: an already flooded market is being swamped by auto-generated junk! But hey! It's better than getting up at the crack of dawn, fighting it out with other commuters, and trying to motivate 30 teenagers who've got other things on their minds.
