Organic search still drives about 53% of all website traffic, more than any other channel, according to industry data compiled by Ahrefs.
Yet the same research shows that 96.55% of all web pages get zero traffic from Google, mostly because they were never properly optimized or never earned any backlinks.
With WordPress powering 43.6% of the top 10 million websites, according to WPBeginner's research, a huge share of that competition is happening between WordPress sites specifically.
The good news is that WordPress is one of the easier platforms to optimize for search, once you understand which settings actually matter.
This guide walks through the technical, on-page, and off-page fundamentals that move the needle for organic traffic.
Before touching content or plugins, a few foundational settings affect how well Google can crawl and understand your site.
Get these basics right first:
Set your permalink structure to something readable, like /%postname%/, instead of the default query-string URLs
Make sure your site is set to be visible to search engines (check Settings > Reading, since this gets accidentally left on "discourage search engines" more often than you'd expect)
Choose a URL structure (with or without "www") and stick with it consistently
Install an SSL certificate so your site loads over HTTPS, which Google has treated as a ranking signal for years
Review your essential WordPress plugins and remove tools you no longer need.

A dedicated SEO plugin handles a lot of technical work automatically: generating an XML sitemap, adding schema markup, controlling meta titles and descriptions, and flagging on-page issues as you write.
Popular options include Yoast SEO, Rank Math, and All in One SEO, each of which offers a capable free tier.
Once installed, submit your XML sitemap to Google Search Console right away so Google can discover and index your pages faster.
Most of these plugins also let you set default title and meta description templates, which saves time across large sites with many posts or product pages.
Page speed is a confirmed part of Google's ranking algorithm, and it directly affects user behavior too: research shows 53% of visitors abandon a mobile page that takes longer than three seconds to load.
Google's Core Web Vitals (loading speed, interactivity, and visual stability) specifically measure the kind of user experience that both search engines and visitors care about.
A caching and optimization plugin makes the biggest difference here with the least manual work, since it handles caching, image lazy loading, and file minification in one place.
If you're deciding whether a tool like this is worth adding to your stack, this WP Rocket review for 2026 breaks down what it actually improves on a typical WordPress site.
Google has used mobile-first indexing for years, meaning it primarily crawls and ranks the mobile version of your site, not the desktop version.
A theme that looks fine on desktop but breaks or loads slowly on mobile puts your entire site's rankings at risk, not just your mobile traffic.
Test your key pages on an actual phone, not just a browser's resize tool, and pay attention to font size, tap target spacing, and whether any content gets cut off or requires horizontal scrolling.
On-page SEO is where most of the day-to-day optimization work happens, and it's also where WordPress's structure helps the most, since most SEO plugins build these fields directly into the post editor.
For every important page or post, make sure you have:
A unique, descriptive title tag that includes your target keyword naturally
A meta description that accurately summarizes the page and encourages a click
One clear H1 heading, with H2s and H3s used to organize subtopics logically
A URL that's short, readable, and includes the primary keyword where it fits naturally
Internal links to other relevant pages on your site
Write for the person searching first, and let the keyword optimization follow naturally from thoroughly answering their question.
Content that reads like it was written to satisfy an algorithm usually ranks worse, not better, in modern search.
How your content connects to itself matters almost as much as the content itself.
A logical structure, organized around topic clusters with a clear hierarchy of category and subcategory pages, helps both visitors and search engines understand what your site covers and how deep that coverage goes.
Internal linking distributes authority from your strongest pages to newer or less-visible ones, and it also keeps visitors on your site longer.
Whenever you publish new content, look back through older, related posts and add a link to the new page where it fits naturally.
Using W3C's guidance on descriptive links can also make internal navigation clearer by helping visitors understand where each link will take them before they click
Images affect SEO in two ways: they contribute to page speed, and their alt text and file names give search engines additional context about what your page covers, especially relevant for ranking in Google Images.
Following W3C's image accessibility guidance can also help you write useful alt text that communicates the purpose or information of each meaningful image.
Image optimization checklist:
Use descriptive file names instead of generic ones like "IMG_4821.jpg"
Add descriptive alt text to every meaningful image, focused on what it actually shows
Compress images before uploading so they don't slow down your page
Use appropriately sized images rather than letting the browser scale down an oversized file
Schema markup (structured data) helps search engines understand specific details about your content, like a recipe's cook time, a product's price and availability, or a blog post's author and publish date.
This can unlock rich results in search, like star ratings or FAQ dropdowns, which tend to improve click-through rates even without a ranking change.
Most modern SEO plugins add basic schema automatically for common content types, and many also let you add more specific schema, like FAQ or how-to markup, directly from the post editor without touching code.
Backlinks remain one of the strongest ranking signals Google uses, and the data on this is stark: research from Ahrefs found that 96.55% of pages with zero backlinks also get zero organic traffic.
Earning links from other reputable, relevant sites signals to Google that your content is trustworthy enough for other sites to reference.
Realistic ways to build links include publishing genuinely useful, citable content (original data, tools, or guides), guest posting on relevant industry sites, and reaching out when your content is mentioned without a link.
Link building tends to be slower and more manual than technical or on-page SEO, but it consistently separates pages that rank from pages that don't.
You can't improve what you're not measuring. Google Search Console shows you exactly which queries bring traffic to your site, which pages are indexed, and any crawl errors or manual actions affecting your visibility.
Pair it with an analytics tool to see what happens after someone lands on your site, including bounce rate, time on page, and conversion behavior.
Review both regularly, not just when something breaks. A steady decline in impressions for a previously strong page often signals a content or technical issue worth investigating before it turns into a bigger drop.
