Reading Literacy Experience
When I was younger, I was an avid reader, I didn’t have a specific genre I read but I loved learning about everything and anything. From using anatomy books as a bed time story at 8 to reading about many popular works of fiction such as “Harry Potter” or “The Maze Runner”. Reading is an extremely important thing for people of all ages to do because it allows for learning and fun whenever or wherever you need.
Before I took this English Comp class I didn’t enjoy reading as much, this may be due to books about mystical worlds or dystopian governments didn’t have the same allure they had on me as a kid. But it could also be because I didn’t fully comprehend or understand what I was reading. For example, when I was researching for my AI essay, I couldn’t fully understand what I was readying due to me getting overstimulated by the amount of information. But as I went through this class my reading comprehension and want to read has increased by a noticeable margin.
One of the strategies that allowed me to get better at reading is skimming, now this strategy is about looking for key words are events in a book and is mostly usable in academic journals or textbooks. This strategy allowed me to get more information on different topics much faster than how I did it originally, which was reading every word of a textbook. Skimming is a wonderful strategy that I use in everyday tasks now, for instance when I’m studying, I will skim for important information, or if I am at a restaurant I won’t read every menu option but just skim to food I may like.
The strategies I learned in this class will aid me in future endeavors, for instance when I get into the accounting world I can use the strategies I learned in order to skim for information I need, to comprehend business deals I need to know, or to write better so others can understand what I say. I believe it is heavily important to build these reading skills as they will aid you forever in life.
