Google Domains was one of the best places to register a domain name. It offered affordable prices ($12 for a .com domain), free Whois privacy, and free Google Cloud DNS service.
Unfortunately, you can no longer buy domains from Google because they shut down Google Domains in 2023 and sold it to Squarespace.
So, what’s another reliable place to register a domain name these days?
The following are three of the best domain registrars I have personally had a great experience with:
I’ve been using Namecheap for many years as my main domain registrar and I don’t have a single bad thing to say about their service. Well, they could tone down upselling a little bit, but that’s something you’ll encounter with pretty much any other registrar these days.
Pros:
Discounted first-year registration prices
Affordable renewal prices
Free Whois privacy
Free DNS and Premium DNS (optional add-on)
Cheap SSL certificates
Quick support via chat
Cons:
They increase renewal prices every now and then
Upselling during checkout can be a bit annoying
Spaceship is a new player in the game, and I think it’s a great alternative to Google Domains where you can buy domains for cheap. They have the lowest registration and renewal prices for many TLDs. I like their modern interface despite a few bugs here and there (they’re improving it and adding new features, so it’s worthwhile).
Pros:
Low registration and renewal prices
Free Whois privacy
Nice and modern interface
Cheap web hosting plans
Cons:
Some bugs in the interface
Some features are a work-in-progress
Dynadot is another decent place to register domain names at prices similar to Google Domains’ low prices. I’m a fan of Dynadot’s stylish interface and the straightforward checkout process. There is minimal upselling and they accept many payment methods, including crypto payments.
Pros:
Reasonable prices
Free Whois protection
Free email account with each domain
No annoying upselling
Cons:
Their website builder isn’t that good
Although you can’t register a domain at Google Domains anymore (it’s closed), the price for a .com domain is $12 per year. This is also the price for .net and .org domains.
I think Namecheap, Spaceship, and Dynadot are all great alternatives to Google Domains. Spaceship has the lowest renewal rates, so if you own multiple domains, you can save a good amount of money on renewals.
No, Google Sites allows you to use your custom domain name, but you must first register the domain elsewhere.
No, the maximum registration period of a domain name is 10 years. You can renew your domain at any time to extend its registration period, but it cannot exceed 10 years.
Namecheap offers discounted registration prices for many TLDs (first-year only). Spaceship and Cloudflare offer the cheapest domain renewals, but be advised that Cloudflare doesn’t allow you to change the domain’s nameservers.
