What is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day?
In 2006, the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization (WHO) launched World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) at the United Nations. The mission of WEAAD is to raise awareness of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue.
Of particular concern to financial institutions is the exploitation of seniors in banking. Rough estimates show elder fraud in the United States to consist of nearly 8 million cases resulting in nearly $150 billion in losses every year. In Hawaiʻi alone, elder fraud comprises approximately 22,500 cases in which seniors experience losses of nearly $2 billion dollars annually (Bischoff, P., 2020 | Citation available on the Resources page).
This event is presented by a community-based team of government and community organizations in Hawaiʻi that are committed to addressing abuse, neglect and exploitation of elders through enhanced collaboration and coordination of community resources.
