MY OWN COLOR

All skin tones contain every color, and with these self portraits kids mix up their own unique skin color, and represent aspects of the culture, experiences and community that shape their backgrounds.

I SEE COLOR

We all perceive colors differently through our individual perspectives! We each have unique eyes, experiences and associations.

In the "I See Color" project, we discuss perception and how objects appear as colors by reflecting various light waves into our eyes. Students learn how a basic color wheel is laid out, and how the primary paint colors relate to secondary colors by mixing.

MELANIN RAINBOW

We learned about melanin and how every skin type has melanocyte cells which produce melanin (some more and some less). Melanin tells the story of our heritage and relates to whether our ancestors come from places with more or less sun. Melanin gives our skin various beautiful brown colors. By mixing all three primary paint colors together we can make all different browns, to build the rainbow of our community.

"I Protect" Human Rights Mask

When we wear our mask we protect both ourselves and our community. With these masks, students thought about human rights that they want to protect and designed a mask to represent this idea.

We designed our masks with complementary colors, which are the most different and the most powerful combinations!

Ruby Bridges Mini Monument

Monuments help our community remember important events in our history. Ruby Bridges played a brave role in changing our history. In this project we make a monument about how kids can change the world and fight for important rights like education!
