That is quite unfortunate. I was hoping there was some system in place that works similar to dropbox, where a background program runs (which does the password checking and finds out what the current IP of the drive is) and it integrates with the windows explorer. The mycloud desktop app seems ok if you want to access one file but for watching pictures or small videos in succession seems quite a pain.

The manual you reference seems to indicate you can backup to a cloud drive like S3. I have a single drive MyCloud from about a year ago and there is no backup tab on my UI. Does only the mirror have the option to cloud backup? Does a later model single drive MyCloud offer that feature?

Windows 10 version 1709 (also called the Fall Creators Update) introduced the cloud files API. This API is a new platform that formalizes support for sync engines. The cloud files API provides support for sync engines in a way that offers many new benefits to developers and end users.

The Cloud Mirror sample illustrates how to build a solution that uses the cloud files API. It is not intended to be used as production code. It lacks robust error handling and it is written to be as easily understood as possible. It's called Cloud Mirror because it simply mirrors a local folder on your local disk. You specify a server folder that is meant to represent your cloud file server and a client folder that is meant to specify the sync root path. A top-level node appears in the navigation pane in File Explorer called TestStorageProviderDisplayName, and this node maps to the specified client folder.

To mitigate this compatibility issue, the cloud files API always hides its reparse points from all applications except for sync engines and processes whose main image resides under %systemroot%. Applications that understand reparse points correctly can force the platform to expose cloud files API reparse points using RtlSetProcessPlaceholderCompatibilityMode or RtlSetThreadProcessPlaceholderCompatibilityMode.

If you want to store your files in iCloud Drive and another cloud storage service, you can keep copies of your files in both, but you can't keep folders from a third-party cloud service in iCloud Drive. You can keep your other cloud service folders in a different place on your Mac, like the home folder.

Your Dropbox in the cloud is a mirror of the Dropbox folder on the hard drive. Files added to the Dropbox folder on the hard drive are uploaded to the cloud, but must also remain on the hard drive . If you delete them from the hard drive, they will similarly be deleted from the cloud. The local and cloud folders are kept in step. Dropbox provides mirror storage, not additional storage.

But you are saying dropbox is merely mirror storage, not additional storage? So is dropbox just like a backup? And of course a means to easily share? What is an alternative app or other choices if I really just need all the pics and vids taken off of my pc and put somewhere else so I can free up space on my pc. The main things I will be storing are photos and video tutorials from iphone, ipad and gopro. I am starting to see that maybe dropbox is not what Im looking for? My pc and both mobile devices are near capacity for storage, I need additional safe storage that I can easily reach from mobile devices and easily use again from mobile devices if necessary. Our company runs several applications within the Citrix environment, so in addition to my normal desktop applications, there are several programs that I need to run from either a direct Citrix shortcut, or via Citrix remote desktop, which I believe is running Windows 7. The stand-alone Citrix applications that I run via direct shortcut stay windowed and running only on one monitor, as desired and expected. However, the remote desktop session always opens in full screen mode and spans across all three monitors, which is NOT what I want.

If I press the Shift-F2 keys, the Citrix desktop switches to windowed mode, allowing me to resize and move the window to just one monitor, but the desktop is messed up and unusable, presumably due to the difference in resolution and/or DPI. The start menu bar isn't positioned correctly and the mouse position is wrong, meaning the active area is 2-3 inches away from where I click. I usually have to force close the window in order to exit, as there's no way to click on the 'Start' menu. See screenshot1 attached.

Bart Jacobs - I do not know if the published desktop is configured to always launch in full screen, but I have to assume it is, based upon the fact that it is doing so. How or where would I check this?

Alozzy - I have tried your suggested solution, but unfortunately it did not work for me. I was hopeful it would, as this is the first suggestion I have seen online that addresses the idea of essentially disabling the default display by closing the lid of the Surface Book. Unfortunatley, the behavior of the remote desktop is still the same... it always spans all three monitors as soon as I enable the Surface Book display.

The only solution I have found that is actually manageable and usable is to start the Citrix Workspace app and connect to the remote desktop session, then once the desktop loads, press the SHIFT-F2 key combination, which places the desktop into windowed mode, which is unusable due to the resolution issue noted in my original post.

One of my co-workers pointed out that once the desktop has finished loading and is running in windowed mode, I can right click on the window title bar at the top of the screen and select the 'Resize Session' option. I then select 'Custom' from the Desktop Size list and enter the resolution of the monitor I want to run the desktop on, in my case 1920x1080.

I can then drag this window to one of my external monitors and click the 'full screen' box in the upper right and it fits my external monitor screen perfectly, but still allows me to access my local desktop and task bar on all three monitors. The only drawback is that there appears to be no way to save these settings between sessions.

The problem mentioned about the screen opening in the 3 monitors i always had but always managed to press "SHIFT+F2", drag the desktop to the main window and then double click on the grey zone ate the top of the Citrix desktop to automatically resize it.

Deleting a local copy whilst keeping a cloud one would be a different use case, akin a disjoint copy. Perhaps if the above github FR that covers two scenarios got implemented it would be possible to set a disjoint status?

As for github, Just saying there is a similar request with the ability to specify which side is the golden copy. Canned response: use webdav. I only fear one that covers phone to nextcloud server one way mirror will end in the same vein. Better dismissed than not having uttered a word though.

Nextcloud will probably never be able to achieve the same semaless experience on mobile, that Google Workspacec offers on Android. The cost would be far too high. In the corporate space with their browser apps, however, they are doing very well and are on par in many areas, and they even have some unique features.

Whilst it might be difficult to become a ggl photos replacement in terms of the photo edit functionality, nextcloud has much potential in how it handles the files behind photos, already preserving directory hierarchy, allowing to sort by name, album etc. I did notice some options about handling conflicts on sync, which prompted me to suggest a key function is missing among them.

A word of comment on a few alternatives:

Photoprism - not privacy-friendly, calls home to a custom geolocation server.

Immich - not very mature, claims not production ready. Probably the closest competitor to nextcloud for off-phone storage. Not really an alternative for a mixed (non-photo) dataset.

Les pas - still syncs changes both ways like the nextcloud app. Requires folders with a rigidly defined structure. Photo only.
