ABOUT THE ESL and BILINGUAL EDUCATION ENDORSEMENTS
Educators interested in adding the ESL or Bilingual Education endorsements to a valid PEL are encouraged to visit their local ROE or the ISBE website for current requirements.
All candidates seeking an ESL or Bilingual Endorsement must provide proof of either three (3) months of full-time teaching OR 100 clinical clock hours of experience in a setting with Limited English Proficient (LEPs) students for the ESL endorsement and (specifically) TBE Bilingual (program) students for the Bilingual Endorsement.
Appropriate Target Language Proficiency or English Language Proficiency test (as applicable) is required for the Bilingual Education Endorsement ONLY,
Complete an endorsement application through your ISBE Educator Licensure Information System (ELIS) account. Click here for a helpful how-to video.
When the endorsement application is reviewed by ISBE an email notification from noreplylicensure@isbe.net will be sent to the email account associated with the ELIS account. Ensure the email address associated with the ELIS account is current.
The ISBE application notification will identify any missing endorsement coursework and/or testing.
If the deficiencies are completed within the application expiration date, no additional fees will be required to earn the endorsement.
If the deficiencies are not completed within the application expiration date, an additional endorsement application will need to be submitted.
