I signed the petition, what can I do now?
The best thing to do is share this petition with your friends and tell our Board of County Commissioners how you feel. You can do that by calling or emailing them, but the best way is to make public comment at a BCC meeting. It will be important that we have folks showing up to meetings periodically until the new budget is finalized. We can't show up to one meeting and move on. If we move on, our commissioners will too. We cannot let them forget how much the community values and relies on library services.
Attend the BCC meeting on November 19th, 2024 at 10:00 AM. The Commissioners meet in the County Commission Chambers, located at 1001 E. Ninth Street, Building A Reno, NV 89512. Be sure to show up a few minutes early so you can sign up to make public comment. Bradley, the organizer of the petition, will be there with you. If you can't make it, you can submit public comment online here: https://washoe-nv.granicusideas.com/
You only get 3 minutes for public comment, but don't overthink it. Just share what you love about the library and how it impacts your life. Are there any particular community events you love? Did you rely on library wi-fi and computers to apply for jobs or make a resume? Do you just like reading books and doing that for free?
Share this petition with everyone you know. If you would like to go out and petition or post the petition in your business, you can download and print it from our Google Drive folder.
If you do this, be sure to let Bradley know by one of the methods explained below. If you create your own flier, feel free to send it to us and use it to help the petition. However, please be respectful of all places and businesses you visit. Do not become a nuisance. Be sure to ask business owners before posting on community boards or windows.
Follow the petition organizer on Instagram @_bratwuurst . There, you can keep up with any updates Bradley has in real time and be the first to know when they plan to attend a meeting or gather signatures.
Finally, join us on Discord! There, fellow "library lobbyists" can chat about book recommendations and library events while helping Bradley mobilize this initiative. That's where all of our planning for petitioning and attending board or commissioner meetings will take place.
NOTE: I am currently speaking with Freedom to Read Nevada, the PAC that originally campaigned in favor of WC-1 prior to the election. After meeting with them this Thursday, 11/14, I will have more information on how we can all join forces with them. I know lots of people are eager to get mobilized! I just want to make sure we are coordinated in our efforts :)
If you have any questions, ideas to share, or need to get physical petition signatures to Bradley, email them at leavittbradleym@gmail.com.
