The STAR Awards (Student Theatre Arts Recognition) recognize excellence in public high school musical theater through adjudication, written feedback, and awards for student achievement. Developed through a partnership between the Westchester County Arts Leadership Association (WCALA) and the Lower Hudson Council of School Superintendents (LHCSS), STAR supports student performers, musicians, designers, directors, and technical theater teams across the Lower Hudson Valley.
STAR recognizes public schools that audition and cast productions from their own enrolled student bodies within established school district boundaries. WCALA has developed the adjudication system and trains adjudicators to identify strengths and areas for growth. The program recognizes achievement at multiple levels.
Private schools wishing to offer their students STAR’s evaluation, feedback, and recognition opportunities may seek admission to a separate category reserved for private institutions. Their productions receive adjudication and recognition exclusively within that category, reflecting their ability to enroll students from beyond public school district boundaries.
To recognize excellence in public school musical theater, strengthen students' and directors' work through specific feedback, and expand opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate their talents in performance, music, and technical theater.
STAR recognizes excellence in public school musical theater across performance, musicianship, direction, design, technical theater, and ensemble work.
Every participating school receives written feedback identifying strengths and offering specific recommendations for improvement.
Trained adjudicators apply WCALA’s evaluation criteria consistently across productions.
STAR provides recognition at multiple levels of achievement using common standards.
Theater educators across the Lower Hudson Valley share practices in directing, instruction, and technical production.
After the pilot year, we plan to build beyond simply offering awards. Student workshops and masterclasses in performance, music, design, and technical theater; mentorship and scholarships; professional learning for directors and educators; partnerships with colleges and theater professionals; and even a regional exemplary performance featuring students from participating schools will create a new landscape for collaboration and growth that will allow us to more fully utilize the incredible talent and resources available in our region for the benefit of all students.
