BEND — Ryder Carpenter ran for three touchdowns and the Mountain View defense pitched a shutout as the Cougars rolled past the visiting Crook County Cowboys 41-0 Friday night in 5A Intermountain Conference play.
Coming off a 24-7 loss to Summit, head coach Brian Crum's Cougars wasted no time making a statement. Carpenter found the end zone twice early to put Mountain View up 14-0, and the Cougars never looked back. Leaning on their ground game, they kept control of the line of scrimmage all night, with Carpenter adding his third touchdown and Carson Bottemiller helping set up another scoring drive.
The 41 points were a season high for Mountain View and a big turnaround for an offense that managed only seven points a week ago. On the other side of the ball, the Cougar defense was suffocating, handing Crook County its first scoreless game of the season. That's nothing new for this unit: Mountain View has won 11 of its last 13 games dating back to last year, allowing just 9.2 points per game over that stretch.
The win improves the Cougars to 4-1 and keeps them firmly in the Intermountain race under Crum, who has led the program since 2012. Mountain View went 10-2 a year ago and looks ready for another deep run.
Seniors Robbie Capers (6) and Landon LeFeber (11) leave the field at halftime.
The schedule doesn't get any easier. Mountain View hits the road on a short week to face Caldera in a crosstown matchup on Thursday, October 8. Head coach Ryan Miller's Wolfpack come in at 4-2 after a 60-29 league win over Redmond, a high-scoring performance that will test the Cougars' defense. Miller, who took over as interim coach in 2024 before being named permanent head coach, has Caldera playing some of its best football since the young school began varsity competition.
Sophmore DB Michael McKinnon (19) locked in on Senior WR (5)Krew Harrison.
For Crook County, Friday was a tough night in Bend. The Cowboys came in unbeaten in league play, but the loss drops head coach Pard Smith's squad to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference. They'll look to regroup at home in Prineville on Friday, October 9, against the Ridgeview Ravens.
Ridgeview, led by head coach Patrick Pileggi, enters at 4-1 and will be hungry to bounce back after a heartbreaking 14-13 loss to Summit. The Ravens are coming off a seven-win season and a playoff berth last fall, and the Cowboys will need a much stronger offensive showing to keep pace.
With league play heating up across Central Oregon, next week offers plenty of storylines: Mountain View and Caldera battling for position, Ridgeview looking to get back on track, and Crook County fighting to get back on the winning side.
