Rosenberg Library

This community treasure has offered over a century of service to the Galveston area. The building itself was dedicated on June 22, 1904, the birthday of its patron, Henry Rosenberg. The Moody Memorial Wing opened in 1971, more than doubling the floor space and allowing for a children’s library, a history center, several galleries to showcase museum collections, and later, a computer lab.

Rosenberg Library History Center

The Galveston and Texas History Center collects, preserves and organizes archival materials that document the history of Galveston and Texas, focusing on Galveston from the city’s incorporation in 1839 through the present. Their collections consist of books, manuscripts, photographs, maps, architectural drawings, oral histories, vertical files, and ephemera.

Helpful Tips for Refuse & Recycling 

How can you make your garbage pickups more efficient? How can you make it safer for the city workers who pick up your trash? How can you get the maximum value from city services? Here are some helpful tips:

 COG Recycling Center

The Galveston Recycle Center accepts recycled materials 24-7. Staff is available to assist between 8 AM and 4:45 PM. Residents are required to provide proof of residency (example: Driver's License) to deposit tires or oils.

Galveston Municipal Utilities

The mission of the combined utility is to provide our customers with reliable and resilient services using innovative technologies and best maintenance practices, while remaining fiscally responsible. As good stewards of our resources and environment, the goal of the utility is to provide our citizens and visitors with safe drinking water, and harmless removal of wastewater in compliance with the TCEQ and EPA.

Eye on Water

The City of Galveston has recently upgraded most of the water meters in the Williams-Borden Neighborhood. As part of the upgraded metering system, customers have access to a NEW smartphone application with valuable data on water usage and leaking pipes/irrigation systems.

Short Term Vacation Rentals

Short-term rentals have had an incredible surge in popularity due to home-sharing platforms like Airbnb, VRBO and others. Here in Galveston STRs are required by the Parks Board to adhere to a variety of restrictions/regulations.

Golf Cart Rules & Regulations

Many Galvestonians use golf carts as a means of transportation. They are convenient, efficient and can be a great way to get around the island - IF you follow the City of Galveston’s rules and regulations.

Galveston County Tax Office

You can search for any account whose property taxes are collected by the Galveston County Tax Office. After locating the account, you can pay online by credit card or eCheck.

Galveston City Marshal/Code Enforcement

You can file a code violation complaint via the on-line reporting portal. These contacts may be made anonymously and a tracking number is issued so you can view the case status.

Animal Control

The Animal Services Unit supervises animal control activities within the city. Animal Services Officers respond to all animal bite cases, animal welfare complaints, deceased animals, animals running at large, injured animals both wild and domestic. 

Injured Bird Rescue Network

Started in January 2017, the Galveston Bay Injured Bird Response Team has coordinated volunteers from Master Naturalists, Audubon Texas Estuarine Rescue Network, Galveston Animal Control, Galveston Island Humane Society, and Wildlife Center of Texas to rescue over 350 injured birds of 66 different species! 

Galveston Island Humane Society

GIHS is dedicated to promoting animal welfare and the protection and prevention of unwanted or homeless animals of Galveston Island. Located at 6814 Broadway, the shelter helps to find loving homes for dogs, cats, rabbits, small animals. Contact. Phone. 409-740-1919. 

COG Coyote Management

The City of Galveston and the Animal Services Unit is utilizing the HSUS Coyote Management Plan as our Guideline for effective coyote conflict management and coexistence.

McGuire-Dent

McGuire-Dent, located at 2222 28th Street, offers a variety of activities for adults and children. The recreation center features a basketball gym, computer lab, game room, racquetball courts and a variety of fitness equipment. The property also features a large outdoor playground, splash pad, basketball court and tennis courts.

Lasker Community Pool

This facility, located at 2016 43rd Street, provides residents with a state-of-the-art pool, which includes a recreational swimming with kid-friendly play structures and a body slide, as well as an eight-lane short course yard pool.

Galveston Historical Foundation

The Galveston Historical Foundation (GHF) was formed as the Galveston Historical Society in 1871 and is devoted to historic preservation and history in Galveston County. Over the last sixty years, GHF has expanded its mission to encompass community redevelopment, historic preservation advocacy, maritime preservation, coastal resiliency and stewardship of historic properties.

Galveston Symphony Orchestra

Founded in 1979, the Galveston Symphony Orchestra performs quality classical music with a strong commitment to artistic excellence and community involvement. Dedicated musicians from all parts of the Galveston-Houston area bring unforgettable live concert experiences to Galveston Island.

Galveston's Own Farmers Market

Here in the WB Neighborhood, we are very fortunate to have access to 2 EXCELLENT sources of fresh produce and related products. Galveston’s Own Farmer’s Market is held on Sundays at the corner of 28th and Market Street.

Seeding Galveston

Seeding Galveston is a subscription-based CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) project. Members of the CSA pay in advance for weekly delivery or pickup of current harvestable fruits and vegetables.

The Galveston Island Tree Conservancy

Galveston has a rich history and diverse population — of both people and trees. Our vision and challenge is to make lasting connections between Galvestonians and their trees on our streets, in neighborhoods and public spaces.

While visiting GITC site you will also have access to Tree Stories -  an ongoing series of articles about island trees, tree care and tree issues, authored by our own Margaret Canavan.

Galveston Gardening.com

The goal of GG is to provide information on landscape gardening topics, events and activities for Galveston and the Texas Upper Gulf Coast area. ALL with a HEALTHY SENSE OF HUMOR and FUN!!!  

Galveston’s International Oleander Society

The International Oleander Society gardens, located at 2624 Sealy Avenue, contains the most extensive collections of ‘Nerium oleander’ to be found anywhere in the world.

The Galveston Garden Club

The Galveston Garden Club meets at the historic 1847 Powhatan House at 35th and Avenue O.  Meetings provide opportunities to meet gardeners and become familiar with local gardening information.

Galveston’s Historic Trolley System

The trolley is $1 for adults, while minors who are accompanied by adults can ride for free. Riders will need to bring exact change to place in the fare box; drivers do not have the ability to make change for riders. The trolleys pass each stop on the trolley route approximately every 30 minutes. A transfer between the Downtown and the Seawall Loop is included in the price.

Galveston Art Walk

Presented every 6-8 weeks in partnership with downtown galleries, artist studios, nonprofits, and local businesses, ArtWalk takes place inside existing art spaces. This popular event is free and open to everyone.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

OLLI at The University of Texas Medical Branch began in 2002 to provide a welcoming learning environment for those 50 and older who are interested in learning for the joy of learning. The curriculum at OLLI at UTMB is designed by our members and reflects our broad interests, capitalizes on our unique regional and environmental resources, and utilizes local experts as faculty to enrich the lives of our entire community.

Galveston Nature Tourism Council

GINTC provides leadership for efforts to make the Island’s natural resources accessible to people in a manner that will sustain those resources for current and future generations. We also present events and products to help residents and visitors more fully enjoy the natural wonders of the Island.

Galveston Island State Park

Come to the island to stroll the beach or splash in the waves. Or come to the island to fish or look for coastal birds. No matter what brings you here, you’ll find a refuge at Galveston Island State Park. Just an hour from Houston, but an island apart! With both beach and bay sides, Galveston Island State Park offers activities for every coast lover. You can swim, fish, picnic, bird watch, hike, mountain bike, paddle, camp, geocache, study nature or just relax!

City of Galveston Parks Department

The mission of the Parks and Recreation Department is to create, promote and administer the best possible recreational programs and, in addition, to manage and maintain the best possible recreational facilities. In addition to overseeing the city’s parks, fields, recreation centers and tennis courts, department staff maintain the city’s esplanades, parkways, cemeteries, and public building grounds.
