After 30 years in journalism, I've learned that great storytelling is at the heart of the human experience. Stringing together a collection of words, images or sound bytes that make another human think, laugh, cry ... just feel ... is the path in which we all connect. It isn't easy. I tell my students the process to get there is often frustrating and agonizing. But upon completion, there's nothing like it. My stories have taken me to 47 states, 18 countries and six continents. From from Barrow, Alaska, 330 miles north of the Arctic Circle, to Christchurch, New Zealand, on the country's south island. Since leaving ESPN in 2023 I returned to my alma mater, The University of Iowa, in an effort to share what I've learned with the next generation of great storytellers while continuing to write myself as a contributing writer to Chicago Magazine and Iowa Magazine.
