The charter membership of Wayamba Toastmasters at the Charter Installation Ceremony
In 2007, Wayamba Toastmasters was established in Kurunegala, Sri Lanka, becoming the second outstation Toastmasters Club after Kandy. This achievement was made possible by the concerted efforts of professionals in the city who were eager to improve their communication and leadership skills. The club's pioneers were Eng. Gamini Dissanayake, Eng. MY Zainudeen, Eng. Upali Jayakody, and Eng. Chitra Nissanka, guided by DTM Zameen M Saleem and DTM Sudash Liyanage. The club's first president was TM Gamini Senanayake, succeeded by DTM MY Zainudeen, TM Padmajith Jinadasa, DTM Kapila Weerasooriya, TM Jayantha Abayarathna, TM Neelakanth Wanninayaka, TM Priyankara Dias, and DTM Lawrance Madapatha, who established a strong foundation for Wayamba Toastmasters. DTM MY Zainudeen was the first outstation Distinguished Toastmaster of Sri Lanka, a notable achievement for the club.
In 2015, DTM Ramani Ilangasinghe became the first female president of Wayamba Toastmasters, and during her tenure, the club reached the top positions of district 82, a milestone accomplishment. She was succeeded by TM Chaminda Ganegoda, TM Sisira Somarathna, TM Thakshila Jayasena, and TM Akalanka Wikramarathna. Throughout this journey, the club maintained its President Distinguished Club status and won the Golden Gavel Award in 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2019.
Wayamba Toastmasters has produced four Distinguished Toastmasters and Champion Speakers who have excelled in Division and District competitions in International Speech, Table Topics, Humorous, and Evaluation contests. The club has also produced leaders who have held top positions in district 82. Furthermore, the club has expanded the Toastmasters concept to the Northern part of the country, leading to the establishment of clubs in Anuradhapura, Kekirawa, and the Jaffna Peninsula.
