Hello! For those who may not know me yet, my name is Emily. I am in my third year of Biomedical Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ottawa, and I did a year of Psychology at Carleton University. In my spare time I enjoy doing embroidery, crochet, and other creative crafts. I also volunteer as a First Responder at uOttawa.
My love for teaching began long before any formal tutoring experience. I was the kind of kid who would write myself tests just so I could complete and grade them like a teacher would. It wasn't until the eighth grade that I began to apply this passion in a more formal setting. I would be asked by teachers to help out my classmates once I had completed the work we were supposed to be doing. This first experience definitely solidified my passion for tutoring, and inspired me to start pursuing more formal tutoring opportunities. Over the course of high school I would tutor here and there, mostly friends and family as I didn't have the knowledge to start properly networking, then upon graduation I got a job with a tutoring company to make some money during my year at Carleton. The tutoring company was a wonderful experience that allowed me to hone my teaching skills with a wider variety of students, and since it was entirely remote, I learned to become engaging even through a screen. After tutoring online for a bit over a year, I got a job as a STEM instructor at uOttawa's engineering and science summer camps. The past two summers in this position have taught me more than I could've expected about teaching. Through working with students from K-12, I've learned how to adjust my teaching style for a wide variety of learners, and I've gained experience working with students with learning disabilities.Â
