This series of online talks is kindly hosted by the International Centre of Mathematical Sciences (ICMS) in Edinburgh and will be hosted on Zoom.
Watching talks via Zoom - Guidelines and Etiquette
The seminars will take place over Zoom, kindly hosted by the ICMS. Here are some of the basics as to how these meetings will take place:
Participants are asked to either join the Waves in One World mailing list by contacting daniel.ratliff@northumbria.ac.uk or fill out a simple registration form via ICMS here (name, institution and email), which will close 30 minutes before the scheduled meeting time. Then, before meetings, participants will email out the link to the meeting and will operate a waiting room before the meeting - this helps reassure people with security issues concerning Zoom (see below).
Audience microphones will be muted by default.
Zoom has a text-based chat, and if you'd like to ask a question using your microphone you may ask in the chat for your microphone to be unmuted. Alternatively you can type questions directly into the chat and we will read it out to the speaker.
There is a 15 minute “coffee break” scheduled between the two talks. This is to allow you to use the private chat feature to talk to others. Don't be shy - it's the perfect time to catch up with everyone!
We also ask for your patience with any technical difficulties - after all, this is still an experimental format - but the ICMS has tested this set-up and found it to be reliable.
Security Concerns Regarding Zoom
In the last few weeks, there have been several news stories regarding the security of Zoom as a platform. The UKRI have released a statement in response to this as to why they will continue to use Zoom as their platform of choice, as well as a means to response to reassure those who may have their own concerns about it.
