History
1929: Ralph Hubbard established Hubbard Flight Service which sold and serviced Cessna planes. He also provided flight instruction, delivered the Public Opinion by air to subscribers in Milbank, SD and went on to become Watertown's first airport manager.
1932-1934: American Airways provided passenger service to Kansas City, MO & St. Louis, MO.
1934: Commercial flights began to Omaha, NE. The Stone Hangar was constructed.
1942-1946: The airfield was selected as a satellite training facility during WWII by the U.S. Army Air Corps and Army Air Forces to train to fly & maintain B-17 & B-24 Bombers and to test cold weather equipment & survival techniques. The government constructed hangars, a post exchange, cafe, hospital, and barracks to house up to 450. It officially opened on November 5th, 1942. At the end of the war, the airport was returned to the City under a 99-year lease which was signed July 2nd, 1945.
1952-1953: The City constructed the administration building (the old terminal) which today is being utilized for pilot training by Lake Area Technical College.
1957: North Central Airlines began operations on June 1st creating dramatic growth in passenger traffic.
1968: Major improvements were made to the administration building to accommodate the increased passenger traffic utilizing the facility.
2015: President Barack Obama landed on May 8th to give a commencement address to the graduates of Lake Area Technical College.
2022: Watertown Regional Airport opened the new terminal building in August. The snow removal equipment shop (SRE) was also constructed to house the two new MB-5's.
2025: SkyWest Airlines was awarded a 4 year contract to provide service starting August 1st to Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN (MSP) under Delta and to Denver, CO (DEN) under United.
