The Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) is the principal research and development (R & D) unit of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). Its R&D and extension activities are focused on the five major ecosystems of the Philippines which include forests, upland farms, grassland, and degraded areas, coastal zone and freshwater, and urban areas.
The ERDB was created in June 1987 under Executive Order (EO) 192 which merged the function of the former Forest Research Institute (FORI) and the National Mangrove Committee. Its headquarters is located at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, College of Forestry and Natural Resources (UPLB-CFNR) campus in the municipality of Los Baños, province of Laguna, Philippines about 65 km south of Manila.
FOREST ECOSYSTEMS RESEARCH DIVISION
The Forest Ecosystem Research Division (FERD) is one of the seven divisions of ERDB which plans, formulates, coordinates, and monitors RDE PAPs related to the conservation and sustainable management of production and protection of forests, upland farms, and grasslands, including rehabilitation of mining and degraded areas. It conducts basic research and develops standards and protocols on said areas of concern and assists in the technology assessment, integration, and packaging. FERD also develops, improves, and recommends policies and guidelines for sustainable management of forest ecosystems.
FERD will spearhead the conduct of this international activity in partnership with the Asia Pacific Association of Forestry Research Institutions (APAFRI).
