Through my 20s and 30s, I focused my vocation and avocations primarily on writing, on trying to change the world through journalism and then through raising my child while managing my own web design and hosting company. I continued reading for pleasure, mostly books with strong female leads, such as Kinsey Millhone in Sue Grafton’s alphabet series which begins with A is for Alibi. Over time, I realized though that I wasn’t doing what I was supposed to be doing, I wasn’t having the impact that I wanted to have. I realized that I needed to give back by reaching out to students and encouraging them to write, helping them amplify their voices, and providing them with motivation and opportunity to read books of their own choosing.
