We welcome you to sit with us.
Comfortable (subdued color) clothing is recommended.
We have zafu cushions, zabutons, a few seiza benches and chairs if needed, but feel free to bring your own cushion(s).
Kindly remove shoes by the door.
Please arrive before the start times as we do begin promptly.
If you need to leave zazen early, you can quietly slip out during kinhin (walking meditation) or between meditation periods which are each 25 minutes long.
Please let us know at contact@watermoondojo.us if you need orientation or have any other questions.
Updates or changes in the schedule will be posted on this site.
Arigato (thank you) & deep bow...
Sentient beings are numberless, I vow to liberate them.
Desires are inexhaustible, I vow to put an end to them.
The Dharmas are boundless, I vow to master them.
The Buddha's Way is unsurpassable, I vow to become it.
Sit with back straight in a position that you can maintain without moving for 25 minutes.
Hands are placed in the lap, facing upward, dominant hand used to cradle the other hand (e.g.: left over right). Tips of your thumbs touch each other, forming a compressed oval shape together with your palms. This is the cosmic mudra.
Alternatively the thumbs can simply be clasped together.
Eyes are open, unfocused but resting on a point that is comfortable.
Careful attention is on the in and out of breathing, focusing on a point behind and slightly below the belly button, near the center of gravity of the body. Allowing the breathing to deepen. You may count breaths to ten and start again if you wish. When you notice thoughts or feelings or other distractions have arisen, simply return attention to the breath.
For chants you will find a booklet under your cushion. When in doubt, follow everyone else. If you have questions feel free to ask before the sit starts, or afterwards.
