Our internship program is designed to help students and sponsoring utilities facilitate a learning opportunity in the water and wastewater industry. The internship is designed to allow the student to receive real world experience and the utility to receive assistance over the summer as well as vetting a potential future employee.
Here are the specifics of what our internship is based on, but we are always willing to be flexible for what works for the city, sponsoring utility or student:
Estimated 12 week internship
Up to 20 hours per week
Up to $5,000 in reimbursed costs for funding the internship
What will the intern do?
Demonstrate an understanding of disinfection and chlorination processes
Identify the lab procedures used to monitor disinfection and chlorination
Demonstrate an understanding of the treatment processes
Demonstrate an understanding of sludge stabilization
Describe the various processes for conditioning and dewatering sludge
Demonstrate an understanding of the purpose for disinfecting wastewater
Demonstrate the ability to interpret a wastewater discharge permit
Understand the need and steps taken to operate water valves within the distribution system
Locate, evaluate, document manhole conditions
Assist in locating water shutoff valves
Assist/observe watermain break repair
How is this funded?
The funding for the internship program was provided by the Iowa Chapter of the Water Environment Federation (IAWEA)
The funds are monitored and distributed by the Iowa Rural Water Charitable Organization
