The blocks examined in this website are between Blanchard and Lenora with 1st as it’s eastern border and Elliot bay as it’s western—in modern day Belltown. The blocks are currently a mix between commercial and residential. The main real estate along the water is the Seattle Marriot Waterfront Hotel, it brushes up against Alaskan Way with a view of Elliot Bay. Unless that view is obstructed by the large cruise liners that come into port in the neighboring block. There is an abundance of tourist foot traffic in large part due to being two blocks and a few minutes’ walk away from one of Seattle’s most iconic tourist attractions, Pike Place. Unfortunately, the steep incline – a remnant of the Denny Hill Regrade— directly behind the Marriott cuts both Blanchard and Lenora off from Alaskan way. The foot traffic must use the Lenora Street Elevator – a man-made walkway— to move between levels.
This website will delve into the history of the block while exploring an overarching theme within the city. This block provides a snap shot of the overall cities economic, social and environmental behavior from the first settlers to its future projects.
This view of the street map unfortunately doesn't show the steep incline very well, the satellite view is recommended to get a better visual representation of the area. Unfortunately google sites doesn't allow default to be set to the satellite view.
