Students presented & recognized at NEWWA Spring Conference
April 2023
A contingent of 3 Water for the World students with Professor Goodwill made their presence known at the New England Water Works Association Spring Conference in Worcester, MA . Graduate Student, Jacira R Soares along with her undergraduates, Caitlin Murray and Alexandra Russo, participated in the poster presentation competition, where they won 1st place in the graduate poster presentation
Jacira wins NEWWA Scholarship

Jacira Soares, a graduate student with Dr. Goodwill, has received the 2022 George E. Watters Memorial Scholarship. Jacira was honored at the recent NEWWA Annual Conference. She is the third Water for the World graduate student to win this award, and we are so so proud of her!
Introducing Dr. Spellman!
September 2022
CJ graduated with his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Rhode Island. Two chapters of his dissertation have been submitted to Water Research, and a third chapter will be submitted to AWWA Water Science. CJ was a high-performing and fun loving student, who will be dearly missed. He accepted a position with the Narragansett Bay Commission, so we suspect he will still be around the lab from time to time. Congratulations CJ!
Dr. Goodwill named to AWWA Water Science Editorial Board
August 2022
Dr. Goodwill has named an Associate Editor at the AWWA journal Water Science. At the journal, Dr. Goodwill will focus on handling manuscripts related to water treatment and water chemistry. AWWA Water Science is an interdisciplinary journal that publishes original, refereed (peer-reviewed) research on the science, engineering, and social aspects of water.
Cameron Receives 2021 NEWWA Scholarship
January 2022
Cameron Murray, a masters student in Dr. Akanda’s Group, was awarded scholarship from the New England Water Works Association (NEWWA). The scholarship funds were made available from the George E. Watters Memorial Scholarship, Elson T. Killam Memorial Scholarship, and the NEWWA Scholarship fund for students pursuing studies relating to the water works industry.
Dr. Goodwill named Emerging Investigator by Royal Society of Chemistry
December 2021
Dr. Goodwill has been named an Emerging Investigator by the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology. This honor is given to investigators in the early stages of their career with demonstrated potential to make transformative impacts on the field. As part of the award, Dr. Goodwill published a paper entitled "Moving Beyond Resilience by Considering Antifragility in Potable Water Systems".
Akanda Lab Develops "CholeraMap" App
July 2021
Dr. Akanda's research team, in partnership with Moravian College, Virginia Tech University, and Pennsylvania State University, have developed the CholeraMap app which will help identify potentially unsafe water to communities in developing countries. Read more here.
CJ Appointed to State Board
June 2021
RI Governor McKee appointed CJ Spellman to a 3-year term as an education representative on the State Board of Certification of Operators of Wastewater Treatment Facilities which oversee's the licensing of operators and staff for all of RI's Wastewater facilities.
Student Wins Poster Award
June 2021
Katherine Cretella, an undergraduate student in Dr. Craver's group, placed second in the undergraduate poster competition at the UCOWR/NIWR Annual Water Resources Conference. Katie presented a poster entitled Analysis of Metals in Southern Rhode Island Drinking Water Distribution System.
Dr. Goodwill Receives NSF CAREER Award
May 2021
Professor Goodwill received a prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER Award. This work will contribute towards researching a water treatment method that would be especially useful for small, rural communities. More information here.
Farah Receives 2020 RISEP Scholarship

Farah was recentely awarded the Environmental Scholarship from the Rhode Island Society of Environmental Professionals (RISEP), an organization that "was formed in 1989 to encourage and facilitate the development and support of the environmental services industry in Rhode Island."
Water for the World remotely graduates several students

During the remote 2020 Commencement weekend, 9 Water for the World students were conferred degrees from the University of Rhode Island. Students well represented & recognized at NEWEA Annual Conference
January 2020
A contingent of 7 Water for the World students with Professor Goodwill made their presence known at the New England Water Environment Association Annual Conference in Boston. Two student participated in the poster presentation competition, where graduate student Erika won best graduate poster presentation. Two groups participated in the "Shark Tank" innovation pitch competition where the H2gO team of Isabella & Alexa were recognized for the outstanding pitch on their project. CJ was awarded the 2019-20 Graduate scholarship at the NEWEA awards lunch. Learn more in this URI news release.
Students Earn EGRA Grants

Several Water for the World students, including Farah Nusrat (pictured left) and CJ Spellman, were awarded Enhancement of Graduate Research Awards (EGRA) by the URI Graduate School. These awards aim to promote progress on students own original and creative research ideas.
New URI College of Engineering complex opens
September 2019
To start the 2019-20 school year, the Water for the World lab moved into their new laboratory on the third floor of the $125 million Fascitelli Center for Advanced Engineering!
Students make presence known at NEWWA spring conference

Several students, both graduate & undergraduate, participated in the 2019 New England Water Works Association spring conference poster competition. Zach came away with 3rd place in the graduate division and Isabella & Alexa took first place in the undergrad competition with the H2gO project! URI news bulletin of the project can be read here.
CJ Wins Scholarship!
May 2018
CJ was awarded the Career Scholarship from the Connecticut section of AWWA. The presentation of the award took place at the Connecticut State Capitol building and was recognized in front of the state legislature. We are super proud of him. Well done!
