Cordelia here! Welcome to my info dump session >:DDD
(Includes fun facts + rambles :3)
The oceans produce about 70% of the oxygen we breathe! Everybody say, "THANK YOU OCEANS!!"
Some fish (most sea-life, really) actually sleep with only half of their brain switched off at a time- they stay alert to danger! It's called unihemispheric sleep. Sharks are similar, but in their case most species of shark must swim constantly, even during sleep w (poor guys), in order to keep oxygen filled water flowing over their gills!
Much like fish, but also quite different, chin-strap penguins nod off 10,000 times a day- about 600 naps an houre (4 second micro-sleeps) and it all adds up to more than 11 hours of sleep!! They do this so they can keep an eye on their nests, and protect their eggs and chicks from predators.
Penguins don't have any time where they decrease their vigilance:( (penguins invented anxiety, actually - real /j).
At times, chinstrap penguins will sleep for longer, but only unihemispheric- they can literally sleep with one eye open, resting one hemisphere of their brain at a time! They are able to transition seamlessly between wakefulness, and right-side brain sleep, left-side brain sleep, or whole brain sleep.
The name 'Pacific Ocean' (Largest ocean in the world, covering 30% of the Earth's surface) comes from the Latin name 'Tepre Pacificum', which means peaceful sea:)) It was named by the explorer Ferdinand Magellan, in 1520, as he sailed through a calm patch of water on the ocean. Till date, the Pacific Ocean is the calmest around, so good job to Ferdinand! Solid name, 10/10.
There are more artefacts and remnants of history in the ocean than in all of the worlds museum combined !! For this reason, it can be described as the ✧Planet's mega museum ✧ !

Coconuts are more dangerous than sharks!!
Pop culture and media has trained us to fear sharks, but in reality, they're less dangerous than a falling coconut! Falling Coconuts kill 30 times more humans than sharks do annually

Only about a dozen of the 300 species of sharks have been involved in attacks on humans. Sharks evolved millions of years before humans even existed, so humans are not a part of their normal diets!! They primarily feed on smaller fish and invertebrates.
Attacks, and being consumed by sharks are so rare, really really extremely rare. A shark could eat someone if they wanted to, but they often do not! Sometimes, they'll grab humans on accident (they didn't mean to :( ) when trying to feed on fish. (Swimming during dawn/dusk when the light is low and sharks are feeding makes it hard for them to identify a fish from a human. Also wearing shiny jewelry, because the reflected light could resemble fish scales).
Shark bites are also often to protect a shark's space!! The yearly average unprovoked shark bites on humans globally is 70, resulting in about 5 deaths.
Sharks are actually NOT! 'attracted to human blood'. They know the difference between fish and human blood (they're smart little guys) and while they can smell our blood, it is NOT a scent they associate with food.
In reality, when it comes to Humans V Sharks, humans are the far more dangerous predators- killing approximately 100 MILLION sharks annually.
Sharks can't get cavities!
They're really great at brushing their teeth so they just can never get cavities ever:) /j
The real reason is because their teeth are coated in fluoride, keeping them safe from decay!
Bonus shark teeth fact: they can shed more than 30,000 teeth over their lifespans! The teeth they lose quickly get replaced, as they have several rows of teeth behind their first row of chompers that lay flat inside their moths as a backup until a tooth is shed, and it's time to fill in the gap!
Speaking of teeth, a shark's skin is more like teeth than fish scales! Their skin may look smooth (skin care routine when?), but is actually made up of tiny v-shaped scales, also called dermal denticles, which are made of an inner pulp cavity and an outside layer of dentine, an enamel like material. Because of this, when a shark loses a denticle, it can actually fossilise over time, just like shark teeth!! Adding to the scale's cool factor, they also help sharks swim faster and more stealthily when hunting for prey!
Sharks do not have vocal chords :0. They are silent animals.
Jellyfish are 650 million years old which makes them older than sharks and dinosaurs!
To date, there's only one species that has been called 'biologically immortal': the jellyfish Turritopsis dohrnii. These small, transparent animals hang out in oceans around the world and can turn back time by reverting to an earlier stage of their life cycle:
Jellyfish in its adult stage (Medusa) can reaggregate its cells, not into a new medusa, but into polyps, and from these polyps emerge new jellyfish and continue their life in a free-swimming form, eventually becoming sexually mature.Theoretically, this process can go on indefinitely, effectively rendering the jellyfish biologically immortal, although in practice individuals can still die.
I will now give you random sea-animal + ocean facts stored in my brain B)
Sea Animal
The Dwarf pygmy goby is smallest fish in the world is 0.3 inches long & the pea crab is the smallest crab in the world- female pea crabs measure 0.5 inches across at their largest, and male pea crabs are less than 0.3333 inches wide. (they are the littlest guys).
Oysters can change gender (and back again) based on what is best for mating (The OG genderfluid icons o7).
Catfish have 100,000 taste buds.
The sailfish is the fastest fish in the sea! It can reach speeds of up to 68 miles per hour- NYOOOOOOM
A group of jellyfish is called a smack.
A shrimp’s heart is in its head! ("Think with your brain not your heart" Her heart is literally bigger than her brain (its so tiny) what do you want her to do ☹️ )
Although most species of caridean shrimps have separate sexes, a fair number are sequential hermaphrodites- spends the early part of its adult life as a male and then changes into a female for the rest of its lifetime. (trans icons o7)
Lobsters can live up to 50 years.
Ocean
The Ocean covers 71% of the Earth's surface, and holds about 96.5% of all Earth's water!
Less than 10% of the world's oceans have been mapped, and only 5% has been explored.
The number of species that live in the ocean is unknown.
The deepest point in the ocean is the Mariana Trench, with the deepest point at 11 km (about 6.835 miles).
The longest mountain range in the ocean is the Mid-Oceanic Ridge, stretching over 56,000 km (about 34796.787 miles).
The Great Barrier Rief is the largest living structure, measuring around 2600 km (about 1615.565 miles) and it can be seen from the moon!
Thanks for your time, that'll be all 😁
