Water Mirrors
Promoting knowledge generation and knowledge sharing to tackle water challenges
Promoting knowledge generation and knowledge sharing to tackle water challenges
Water challenges can be very similar in different places around the world. Problems occurring in one side of the world can also be found on the other side, just as if they were reflected in a mirror. Food security can be as challenging in the Valle del Cauca region of Colombia as it is in Egypt; groundwater pollution is as problematic for the Antioquia region in Colombia, as it is to the Tana delta in Kenya; urban wetland degradation is as concerning for the southern part of the city of Bogota as it is for the residents the wetlands of Xochimilco in Mexico City.
Stakeholders in these regions are working hard to solve their own issues. However, they are missing the opportunity to listen to others or to share with others what they know. The knowledge (and the need for it) exist, but the cases that reflect each other are not aware of the mirror in between that connects them.
Water Mirrors aims to promote knowledge generation and knowledge sharing by means of
local, topical research (water reuse, groundwater pollution and urban wetland degradation)
global, integrated research on the relation between equity inclusiveness, ecological sustainability and transdisciplinary processes of technology adoption
promotion of South-South knowledge sharing
The Water Mirrors project has direct connections to the current DUPC3 projects Trans-path-plan, Safe AgroMENA and GWS-SENCE. Besides, it builds on current strong networks and past and present research projects. First, the Academic Research Partnership (ARP), an MoU signed in 2017 among four organisations in The Netherlands and four universities in Colombia, offers a strong collaboration framework. The three Colombian universities involved in Water Mirrors are ARP members. Second, the recent DUPC2 Evidence4Policy project offers access to an ample set of national and local government agencies, NGOs and stakeholders. In addition, the InspirAgua project, a North-South knowledge exchange initiative from the Dutch Blue Deal Programme, is backing up Water Mirrors with their participation in meetings.
