There are two primary objectives of this UG course: first, to become aware of the environment, its different systems, and how various human activities affect it. There are three primary objectives of this PG course: First, to become aware of the serious environmental and health implications of improper waste management. Second, to learn about existing approaches and technological solutions to deal with growing waste-related problems while simultaneously learning about how to recover value from the discarded waste. Third, to design an efficient waste management system and assess the effectiveness of existing waste management systems using life-cycle thinking.
In this PG course, students will first learn about different types of waste and biomass. Then they will learn about different thermochemical and hydrothermal conversion technologies: Combustion, Pyrolysis, Gasification, Hydrothermal Liquefaction and Carbonisation. Students will also learn about different reactor types used in these technologies and various biomass- and ash-handling-related issues. Afterwards, students will learn about various biomass pretreatment approaches and the life-cycle perspective of bioenergy.
