On February 15 Sunnyland Cinemas opened in Sunnyland Plaza.

A murder/suicide at the Sunnyland Car Care building at 2382 Washington Road shook the town.  Kathleen Davis was murdered by her ex-husband, John Davis, at the establishment, who then turned the gun on himself.

Donna Meldahl was the recipient of the 1991 Washingtonian Award.

On November 2, 1991, Doug Lee became the first Washingtonian to play in the National Basketball Association when he played seven minutes for the New Jersey Nets against the Charlotte Hornets, scoring two points.
