In June the "bridge to nowhere" was completed as the first stage of the Washington Bypass.  The second stage would not happen for over two more years. 

The Round Barn, just a skeleton of its former self, was destroyed by fire.

WCHS teacher and coach Jan Smith passed away from cancer in September.  School was cancelled for the funeral.

Beverly Manor won the first team state championship in school history when the softball team beat Casey 11-1 in the championship game.

In February 16-year-old Stacey Hammer was killed and seven other Washingtonians were injured in an auto accident on Cruger Road.

The tennis courts were constructed and opened at Washington Park, replacing ones deteriorating behind City Hall on Jefferson Street.
