In 1926, the city was shocked when Martin W. Conrad, part-owner of C&O Motor Company, was arrested for multiple instances of fraud. Conrad had been quite a high roller since he came to town in 1923, throwing lavish parties and hosting many events for his fellow Kiwanis members. The problem was that he was doing it with the money people were spending on new automobiles that he was not delivering. Conrad was whisked off to Joliet for a short sentence and then left the area.
On October 15, 1926 the William Holland Memorial plaque was dedicated on the square. The plaque was placed on the new bandstand that had been constructed.
