1902

In 1902, the Washington newspaper reported the first automobile ever to be in the city, although it was not owned by a resident.  Probably less than 10,000 vehicles had been built in the country at this point:

"Two men in an automobile were in town Monday. They had come during the day from Gibson City."

William Rinkenberger built his first carpenter shop near the TP& W depot.
