In 1882 the city of Washington purchased 12 acres from J.H. Anthony for use as a cemetery, what we now know as Glendale Cemetery.

Miss Belle Harlan made state-wide news by being elected Police Magistrate over J.W. Patton, editor of the Washington Herald, making Harlan undoubtedly the first female to hold elected office in city history.

The Bloomington Pantagraph made the sensational claim that Washington has a citizen "who stands six feet ten inches in his stockings."
