In 1853 the famous Pearl/Kelso case defended by Abraham Lincoln occurred.
The Peoria & Oquawka Railroad began to extend its line eastward from the Illinois River in 1853. It would take several years for it to be completed, and the first train to travel through Washington on this line (best known as the TP&W) was on February 2, 1857.
