In 1851, a church was constructed on High Street. It served as the Christian Church for approximately eighteen years until ownership transferred to the German Lutheran congregation. This area is now the post office's parking lot.

Hiram H. Kellogg arrived in Washington in 1851. The well-traveled Kellogg was known as the first President of Knox College and was also a church builder and passionate about temperance and abolitionist causes. After leaving Knox College, where he had spent a year in Europe during his time as president, and returning home to the East in 1847, he came to Washington and served as a teacher and a preacher for one year in 1851. He then moved on to another of his many stops.
