Washington Elm Society Manifesto

The Washington Elm Society, based in Ridgewood, NJ, is a local society of the National Society of the Children of the American Revolution (C..A..R.). Founded in 1895, C.A.R. is the oldest patriotic organization for youths in our country. Formal membership is open to children from birth until their 22nd birthday that are lineal descendants of a man or woman who rendered material aid to the cause of American Independence. The ideals of C.A.R. as furthered through our local society’s “grass roots” efforts, seeks to provide our children an enriching supplement to their traditional educational pursuits, teach to them an awareness of and a responsibility to their country, the world around them, and to others; and help them become strong, confident and sensitive young citizens and individuals-all through unique, worthwhile, memorable and fun experiences. Field trips, speakers, games, projects, skits, contests and participation in special events provide just some of the vehicles for accomplishment of these ideals. Among the many topics explored are:

American History and Heritage: One of C.A.R.’s original and continuing goals is to inspire in our young people a pride in their country, a respect for its history, and the preservation of our unique national heritage, through such means as field trips to historic places, skits about important American people and events, and support for the preservation for posterity or our “national treasures” (such as the Star Spangled Banner and the Declaration of Independence.)

Government Studies: As a terrific supplement to a traditional civic and social studies classes, C.A.R. strives to teach youths about the importance and duties of American citizenship, as well as an understanding of our American government and the democratic process, through such avenues as the study of the electoral process and the significance of the right to vote, and important documents (such as the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution and the Bill of Rights) which founded and guide our government. Members have had special opportunities to meet or correspond with representatives of our local, state and national government.

Conservation: C.A.R. teaches children an appreciation for nature, and the importance of protecting our national resources. Programs range from recycling, to beautification of our communities, to preservation of wildlife, to support for the conservation of our local, state and national and international wonders.

Community Service: C.A.R. places a huge emphasis on the importance of showing respect for others and giving back to our communities, especially to those in need. Our Native Americans, senior citizens, and veterans are among the many groups touched by the awareness and support which C.A.R. encourages in its members. Through donations and other active means of aid, our “Kids Helping Kids” and “Mountain Schools” program provides many significant ways for Washington Elm kids to reach out and help fellow kids who are less fortunate. In recent years, our young members have contributed an average of 245 volunteer hours annually to their communities, through such diverse means as candy striping, tutoring, and church camp leadership.

Leadership and Self Esteem Skills: C.A.R. is proud to provide many opportunities for its young people to learn about and practice leadership and teamwork. Society business meetings, chances to represent our society at important local, state and national events, and roles in skits, parades and other public performances are terrific ways for kids to learn about public speaking, working together, self-expression, and other valuable tools for life, while also building their confidence and self esteem.

Washington Elm Society members include boys and girls, range in age from infants to teenagers, and live both locally and out of state. Through the publication of our national award winning Society Newsletter, public service announcements, displays in local public libraries, sponsorship of community events (such as our annual Veterans’ Day Remembrance Day Ceremony) and other methods, Washington Elm reaches out not only to its members, prospective members and their families, but also to our communities, to promote an awareness of our activities, and invite any and all who are interested to take part, learn and have fun! The efforts of this great group of kids have received tremendous recognition: in addition to countless local, state and national awards, Washington Elm placed first in the nation among C.A.R. Societies for 4 consecutive years (from a field of 567 societies) and first in the state of NJ for 5 consecutive years.
