Another Good Housekeeping Seal holder, Persil's liquid laundry detergent topped our test of 42 formulas doing the best job erasing stains from all of our swatches in cold water. It totally zapped coffee and beaten egg yolk from all fabrics in all water temperatures and had clear easy-to-follow instructions on the label. Reviewers online rave about its effectiveness as a stain pre-treater too. If you prefer a formula with a light scent, this may not be the detergent for you as this leaves behind a strong scent to freshly washed laundry.

Powder detergents have been around for many, many years and after years of testing, we find that they work just as well, if not better, than many liquid detergents. This powder from Seal-holder Tide is no exception, cleaning our cotton test swatches just as well in cold water as it did in warm. Tide+ with Bleach includes a color-safe bleach and an activating ingredient to help get and keep your whites and colors bright. It does not contain chlorine bleach so it's safe for washable fabrics and colors. This powder is formulated to work and dissolve in both traditional and high-efficiency washing machines, and in our tests, it did just that. Like other powder detergents, you must be careful to keep it stored in a dry area as any moisture can cause clumping.

In our own testing, we found the measurement lines in the refillable bottle's cap to be a bit hard to read and recommend rinsing the cap after each load to avoid messes on the bottle. According to the brand, the refillable bottles are made from shatterproof glass and the colorful silicone sleeve makes them both pretty and comfortable to hold. At about 33 cents per regular load, it is on par with many other liquid detergents on the market. Sign up for automatic refills to save about two cents per load.

Laundry detergent sheets are convenient to take on the go, require minimal storage space in the laundry room and are usually easier to dose than liquid laundry detergent. When we tested 24 of the most popular detergent sheet brands, this sheet from EC30 came out on top in both our stain testing and our fabric whiteness restoring tests. In fact, they were the only detergent sheet we tested that even came close to the results we saw with traditional laundry detergent packs.

tag_hash_110Woolite's neutral formula removes light everyday soils from all fabrics and is a GH Cleaning Lab favorite for cleaning and protecting delicate fabrics and dark colors from the abrasive effects of washing. For heavily soiled clothing and items with lots of stains, this formula may not be the best option.

Today i assembeld it and kinda rushed the gun, so my first print is in the making and while reading the manual of the "Wash & Cure 2.0" i realised that i have no washing fluid for it. The manual wasn't very clear of whtat to use.

The following day the water should have turned milk-like. Just use it like you would any liquid detergent. It does its job - my laundry is clean and completely odorless. If you prefer a certain scent you can use lavender oil or any other essential oil of your liking. You can keep this laundry detergent in the fridge for up to a week.

Tons of chestnuts on the ground on my bike route. My kids and I picked up about 10 pounds. Made some yesterday and washed my first load. I would say they are similar to soap nuts in that they are not a degreaser. I would suggest treating tough stains first and then washing them with the chestnut detergent. Great gentle wash soap for clothes. My clothes came out smelling like...nothing...clean air?! Dried enough to use for months. Thank you for sharing this!

Works a treat. The kids loved collecting the chestnuts as there was a real purpose behind it. We blitzt a few kilos in our mixer too snd they are drying in the sun as I write. I added a teaspoon of wash soda and a few drops of lavender oil and my washing smells lovely. What a brilliant idea.

To intensify you can use more chestnuts or add up to 2 tablespoons of washing soda or a bit more of baking soda, or you can wash at a higher temperature, if the fabric will allow it.

Hope this helps.

Warm regards,

Shia

I can't remember if I used or threw away the soak water..

I ask about the foam because the first time (with fresh conkers) the liquid was foamy and felt really slimy like soap. The second time it didn't. The first time it worked perfectly.

I didn't use your method, I used a different one from someone off the net. Only found this later. Will check the FAQ thanks

Aesculus hippocastanum (Horse chestnut) IS poisonous but different parts of the tree - the nut/seed, leaf, bark and flowers are prepared and used as medicine. For instance horse chestnut tincture is a good treatment for varicose veins. (I wouldn't recommend home-preparation for medicinal purposes, correctly prepared medicines are easily available and safe.)

However, as already mentioned, simply washing any utensils and blenders used to make clothes washing soap will be enough to render them safe.

Another natural plant to try is Saponaria officinalis. This is a common perennial plant from the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae). It has many common names, including common soapwort, bouncing-bet, crow soap, wild sweet William, and soapweed. There are about 20 species of soapworts altogether.

The scientific name Saponaria is derived from the Latin sapo (stem sapon-) meaning "soap," which, like its common name, refers to its utility in cleaning. It is particularly good for hand-washing delicates. From this same Latin word is derived the name of the toxic substance saponin, contained in the roots at levels up to 20 percent when the plant is flowering (Indian soapnuts contain only 15 percent). It produces a lather when in contact with water. The epithet officinalis indicates its medicinal functions.

Soapwort is pretty with a carnation-like scent and grows to a height of about 70cm. It can be a little invasive in the garden.

Hiya,

Thanks for the tutorial! I would love to try this. The only thing is, I have sports wear that gets used a lot, and I didn't find that soap nuts fully washed them (so not sure conkers would work either). It might work washing them on a higher temperature but ideally I'd like to keep to 40c or below... I'm going to try find a solution for it though!

I find that adding 1 tbsp of washing soda (you should be able to find it in a big cardboard box in big box stores) or up to 2 tbsp of baking soda helps with that. Or you can use this DIY laundry detergent for chestnuts when washing sportswear. Both methods word for us, but we do not use any store-bought deodorant, but this simple, yet amazingly effective (homemade) one.

wow, love this. I try to use natural products as much as possible and i use Aloe Multi Purpose Detergent (i will try chestnuts though).

A third of a cap in the washing machine and 1 teaspoon, yep one! diluted into the handy spray container to use as a cleaner and for hand washing up.

Looked online to dry chestnuts for Christmas decorations and came across this. I had already collected chestnuts. Picked my daughter up from school and told her about this chestnut soap and she (9 years old) insist we tried it. She also said that spiders supposedly don't like chestnuts and wondered whether we would clean the floor with the milk. Novel idea. Clothes came out of the washing machine clean - no scent but faint chestnut aroma and definitely no odour. Hurrah! Looking forward to cleaning my sons socks now! Floor - wow!!!! Clean! No over powering fake scent, no soapy residue, no stickiness. Just squeaky clean! No guesses what we will be doing this weekend! Will give them as Christmas gift too as my family are trying hard to put the environment first.

I'm wondering how much to use in a High Efficiency (HE) washing machine for a low-soil, medium-large load of laundry. Also, will this cause dark colors to fade or leave any residue? For reference, I use the equivalent of 7 tablespoons of the specially formulated HE-specific commercial formulas. Will I need more or less of this chestnut solution? I'm wanting to avoid over-foaming in the machine and having to select 'extra rinse' which wastes additional water. I live in CA. Thanks!

Hi Vany,

How much water do you add to those 5 - 6 chestnuts? You mention in the tips how much of the liquid you use for 1 laundry, so I was wondering how concentrated the detergent is.

Thanks,

Sarah

A tip to make a tabby version / high intensity version. Simply put the liquid nut mylk with vinegar and bicarb into an ice cube tray in the freezer. It'll mold tabbies. You can keep them in the freezer or cupboard.

I think you may have misread the recipe. This makes 5 gallons & calls for 1 Fels Naptha, 1 cup of of both washing soda & borax. You made 3 gallons and used twice as many ingredients. I hope you will try it again soon!! :))

Ive been trying to make this. It doesnt gel right. The top solidifies into a gel and the bottom is liquid. No matter how much or long i heat it or stir it, it will separate and the gel is so hard i cant use it. How do i make it right?

Do you ever make a recipe that adds in OxyClean or sodium percarbonate to get your clothes extra white or would you add this in after the detergent? I really like the option of a liquid one and will be going tonight to pick up the supplies! Thank you

O M G! You guys are so awesome! I was using Borax with baking soda(not washing soda) in my wash with store bought detergent, when I could have been making my own detergent all along!! And I buy the essential oils for skin care and whatever else so these recipes are perfect! In fact, I was going to buy a gallon of this wholesale, prefab, generic detergent this weekend for $35, but now that I know I can make my own with the stuff I already use I am so excited! Plus it will be a great project for me and the kids. My kid also had issues with detergents on her clothing. Sometimes I had to double rinse, but then I started to wash their clothes with baking soda, borax and use shout for stains. No problems. But if I can make gallons of this stuff it would save me a lot more money. Thanks. e24fc04721
