Wasabi Cycle - Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Wasabi Cycle (the "App") handles your information. It is written to meet Apple App Store requirements and EU/UK data- protection law (including the GDPR). By using the App, you agree to the practices described here.

1. Summary (the short version)

1. The App is local-first: your rides and profile are stored only on your device. We do not operate a server that collects your data.

2. We do not use analytics or advertising SDKs, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.

3. The only information that leaves your device automatically is an approximate location (rounded to about 1 km) sent to a weather service to show current conditions.

4. Maps are provided by Apple Maps, a built-in Apple feature.

5. You can export your data at any time, delete all of it from within the App, and optionally share an individual ride with the developer — with sensitive start/finish areas removed.

2. Information the App Processes

1. Location data. With your permission, the App uses your device's GPS/GNSS, barometric altimeter, and compass to record your ride: route (coordinates), distance, speed, elevation, gradient, and heading. This is used to provide the App's core function. Route and location data are stored locally on your device.

2. Approximate location sent for weather. To display temperature and wind, the App sends an approximate location — your coordinates rounded to roughly  1 km — to the third-party weather service Open-Meteo (operated in the European Union). Your precise location is not sent, and no account or identifier is attached.

3. Maps. The App displays maps using Apple Maps (Apple's MapKit framework). Showing the map and your position on it is handled by Apple's built-in services and is governed by Apple's own privacy policy. The App does not send your ride data to any third-party map provider.

4. Profile information you enter. You may optionally enter your weight, height, and gender. These are used only to calculate fitness estimates (such as power and FTP) and are stored locally on your device. Providing them is optional.

5. Activity and fitness data. The App derives and stores metrics such as estimated power (watts), estimated Functional Threshold Power (FTP), calories, splits, and ride history. These are stored locally on your device.

6. Diagnostics (via Apple only). If you have enabled sharing with app developers in your iOS settings, Apple may provide us with aggregate, anonymised analytics and crash statistics through App Store Connect. This data comes from Apple, is not linked to your identity, and we do not receive your rides or personal content through it. You can control this in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements.

3. How Your Information Is Used

We process the information above only to:

1. provide the App's core ride-tracking and display functions;

2. calculate fitness metrics you have chosen to use;

3. retrieve current weather for your approximate area;

4. display maps and your location via Apple Maps;

5. let you export or share your own data at your request; and (via Apple's aggregate reports only) understand crashes and general usage to improve the App.

We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, build advertising profiles, or track you across other apps or websites.

4. Legal Bases (EU/UK GDPR)

Where the GDPR applies, we rely on:

1. Performance of the service you requested (Art. 6(1)(b)) — to record and display your rides, show maps, and retrieve weather for your area.

2. Consent (Art. 6(1)(a)) — for access to device location, which you grant through the iOS permission prompt and can withdraw at any time in iOS Settings; and for optionally sharing a ride with the developer.

3. Legitimate interests (Art. 6(1)(f)) — for receiving Apple's aggregate, anonymised crash and usage statistics to maintain and improve the App.

Because profile data (weight, height, gender) and fitness metrics may be considered health-related, they are handled with additional care, kept on your device, and are optional to provide.

5. Data Sharing and Third Parties

1. Open-Meteo (weather). Receives only your approximate (rounded) coordinates to return weather. No identifier or account is attached. Weather data is provided under the CC BY 4.0 licence. See Open-Meteo's own terms for how they handle requests.

2. Apple. Provides the App Store, on-device services, Apple Maps, and - only if you have opted in via iOS — aggregate, anonymised diagnostics. Apple's handling is governed by Apple's privacy policy.

3. Recipients you choose. If you use export or the optional "Share ride with developer" feature, your data goes only to the destination you select (e.g. email, AirDrop, Files). When sharing a ride with the developer, a privacy zone you configure removes points near your start and/or finish before the file is created.

We do not otherwise share your information with third parties.

6. Data Storage, Security, and Retention

1. Your rides and profile are stored locally on your device in the App's private storage, protected by iOS file encryption (the ride file is written with complete file protection, meaning it is encrypted while your device is locked).

2. We do not operate a backend database of user data, so your ride content is not held on our servers.

3. Data is retained on your device until you delete it. You can remove all ride data at any time via Settings → Data → Delete all ride data, or by deleting the App.

7. Your Rights

Depending on your location (including under the EU/UK GDPR), you may have the right to access, correct, delete, export, or restrict processing of your personal data, and to withdraw consent.

Because your data lives on your device, you can exercise most of these rights directly:

1. Access / portability: export your rides as CSV or GPX from within the App.

2. Erasure: use "Delete all ride data" in Settings, or delete the App.

3. Withdraw location consent: iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services.

8. Children's Privacy

The App is not directed to children under the age required by your local law (for example, under 16 in parts of the EU, or under 13 in the US). We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has provided personal data, contact us and we will assist.

9. International Users

The App processes data on your device. The only automatic external request (weather) is to a service operated in the European Union. Maps are provided by Apple. If you use export or sharing features, any transfer is to the destination you choose.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date will change accordingly. Material changes will be reflected in the App or its App Store listing. Continued use after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised Policy.
