Warzone is a tower defense game featuring high-tech weaponry and large open maps with varying landscapes. The goal of the game is simply to survive as long as possible. There are also several different game modes available for those looking for a new twist on the game.

I found a new tower defense game via JIG, Warzone Tower Defense. It has a standard (but nice) selection of upgradable towers, and it's an open area (like the Desktop Tower Defense games) instead of pre-defined paths (like most every other tower defense game). As the waves go on and the enemies get tougher, you're forced to build mazes (see the image), which I find kind of tedious. Now, you're forced to build mazes in Desktop Tower Defense, too, but at least that ends. Warzone Tower Defense doesn't end, apparently. It just keeps going and going until you die. Now, this is obviously interesting to some people, as their forum is full of people bragging about the levels they reached (before dying or having their browser crash), sometimes with pictures showing the various complicated mazes they've built.

For our first project, each team is required to make a bug and a paper tower. Three bugs move on three straight racetracks towards the paper tower. There are 4 tracks surrounding the tower and the bugs randomly occupy three of them. To defend the tower, it should stop the bug with the laser beam on top of the tower. Last week I went along to see the first game from 11 bit studios, the new independant developer that's made up by a collection of ex-CD Projekt staffers. The first thing the gentleman demoing the game did was apologise for the game's title- Anomaly: Warzone Earth. The second thing he did was explain that it was a tower defense game, which he didn't apologise for. That's because Warzone Earth is a tower defense game that you play... in reverse.

In the world of Warzone Earth a big ol' UFO has crash landed on our planet, and where each chunk of the ship lands an enormous dome of energy springs up. You play the human military commander safeguarding the teams sent into this dome, so it's your job to get your boys to the bit of ship in the centre so they can investigate it, or write their names on it, or something. I'm not sure 11 bit explained that part to me. Along the way various fleshy laser tower type things will try and slaughter you, and your job is to make sure you, instead, slaughter them.

How that works is that you pick four different units from a selection including tanks, heavy tanks, shield generators, aggressive mech type things and so on, and these four units become your "wave". They'll then advance along a path you specify in a small column formation, coming under fire from whatever towers they pass while returning fire themselves.

In all of this your commanders takes the shape of a tiny man who runs around on foot, and most of the game is in you using the special abilities of this little guy to keep your troops safe. One of his powers drops a small circle that heals any vehicles passing through it. Another creates a larger sandstorm that reduces the accuracy of any towers firing at targets within that circle. Your third ability creates a decoy that draws all enemy fire, and a fourth ability that's available in Endless Mode will call in an airstrike. You've got a limited number of each of these, but more show up in the form of floating pickups as your progress, with the aim of leaving you balanced on the edge of your seat.

Finally, by blowing up towers on your route you'll also earn yourself cash than can be used to upgrade each of your four chosen squad-members along the way, making them harder, better, stronger, but certainly not any faster. There will be no skipping quickly past these turrets. You've got to just sit tight and take what's coming to you.

In terms of mechanics, that's pretty much it. There will only be 6 different types of enemy turrets and 6 different units for you to choose from. While it's true that tower defense games often lean on variety to boost longevity, Warzone Earth looks to be going for something a lot more arcade than that.

Missile silos lie at the heart of the Orlov Military Base alongside bunkers and facilities built into the mountainous terrain that dominates the northern portion of the map. Scattered barricades throughout provide squads with a means of defense when pushing into the area.

Though under renovation, the Opal Palace remains a powerful stronghold positioned near the center of the map. The surrounding walls offer valuable cover and easy access to the rooftops of adjacent buildings. Depending on the match, you can entrench here for a solid defense or use it as a launching pad toward many other valuable POIs.

While the game tells a thin story of alien forces landing on Earth and annoying the populace, it's weak and has no bearing on play. No, the value in Anomaly: Warzone Earth is how it flips the genre's overfamiliar structure. Instead of placing towers and wiping out approaching columns of enemies, the player is now the one invading. It may not seem like much of a difference but once the troops are in the trenches, it stands apart from the crowd.

When beginning a map, an overview of each area is given and all of the enemy's defenses can be seen. At this point, it's up to the player to plot a course for the tanks, missile launchers and supply units that will invade. Once a route is plotted, troops start moving forward at a steady pace. The player is able to redirect them at each intersection as necessary, but there's no stopping them until they reach their goal or they die. In essence, it's a slow-moving runaway train that needs to be guided safely to its station.
