Director's vision statement: “The riveting true story of the “Wartime Wanderers” is about to come roaring to life. The series, stretching out over an epic canvas to recount the tale of a band of brothers in sports, arms, and life, will be a moving look at friendship, sacrifice, and heroism during wartime, both on the front and at home. I envision “Wartime Wanderers” as a study in constants and contrasts, moving from tight-knit English villages to carnage-strewn battlefields, from kinetic football matches to tense showdowns between fierce enemies. However, though the lens of the series is wide, the focus is intimate and human-focused. At the heart of the narrative is the bond between the central football team who enlist together to fight in World War II, defending England and the West from the unrelenting Nazi scourge faced by the European powers. It’s a rousing, touching story, full of moments of visual chaos and emotional clarity. I could not be more thrilled to bring “Wartime Wanderers” into living rooms around the world, where audiences are sure to respond to this enthralling journey.

Statement: “As a filmmaker, the story of the Wartime Wanderers is hugely enticing. It combines the dramatic elements of war, romance and friendship with another of my favourite pursuits; Football. As a Boltonian, the story represents the heritage and culture of my town– a proud and dynamic place, rich with interesting characters and stories. When I first learned of the Wanderers wartime team and its inimitable service in the army, I wasn’t surprised, as I have become accustomed to stories of selfless bravery and endeavour performed by the great generation. And so I would be both honoured and excited to make this TV series, a series which I feel I was born to make, for which I can infuse my passion for Bolton Wanderers with my years of World War Two study and a zeal for telling character based stories on film. I know the club, the town and the people, with our distinctive dialect and civic pride, and I feel uniquely placed to give an authoritative and accurate representation. But I am also here to serve the story, and will strive exhaustedly to create a faithful, stirring and fascinating portrait of the teams daring escapades and the many people involved with these extraordinary band of brothers. I await this challenge with relish.”
Wartime Wanderers is based on the amazing true story of a football team that became a legend. It is rare that a story like this comes along and an honour to be involved in the telling of it. It has everything that you could wish for and more. The main problem is that there was so much that hapened to these players, both on the pitch, in their personal lives and when they went to war that it is almost impossible to condense it down and make an audience beleive that this all happened. The story has been meticulously researched by Tim Purcell, both for the book and the screenplay. His passion for the characters, football and the unique series of events that unfolded is palpable. It is a priveledge to be involved in helping to bring the memory of these players and their story to the screen in a way in which deserves to be told.
